I saw the Tiverton v Kettering FA Trophy game this afternoon in which Kettering got their equaliser in the sixth minute of stoppage time after missing a penalty (which hit the upright Tiverton keeper on the knee) in the third minute of time added on. Get your money on them for the Trophy now!
An always absorbing game became gripping for the last twenty minutes once Tiverton went one up through Bobby Hopkinson, a useful little midfielder who started at Argyle. The conditions were difficult - after a week of still, freezing days today was milder and windy. The pitch was treacherous - mud on top, hard underneath. Kettering played a containing game in the first half, defending in depth with the massive Exodus Geohaghon at the centre of things. Not quite Kettering's full-strength team as they were missing Tommy Jaszczun, Guy Branston and Gareth Seddon with a couple of other regulars on the bench. Nonetheless they still had Darren Wrack, Iyseden Christie and the on-loan Richard Graham (Dag & Red and ex-Barnet) who shone and scored Kettering's goal with virtually the last kick of the match.
Kettering also had Jean-Paul Marna - marvellously described in the programme as "the former Paris St Germain, Berkhamsted Town and current French national Futsal striker" - and left back Craig Braham-Barrett (on loan from Peterborough) who caused all sorts of problems when he pushed forward late in the game.
On this showing Tiverton look a better team than they have done in recent seasons. There was a sound display from Matt Villis and a guest appearance for Chris Vinnicombe (now manager of Witheridge). The crowd was 604 including the white-haired gent from Taunton who spends the whole match taking photos (he's already done this at around 150 games this season). You can view his work at www.tauntontown.com/martin_bamforth/ (something of a quantity over quality issue I fear).
