I’m sure I was not the only one who used to get those airfix kits as presents on birthdays and Christmas when I was young. Only thing was I must have been the worst model maker in history and I don’t believe I ever finished making an airfix model and if I did, well it would have looked a complete mess for sure.
Most of the ones bought for me always seemed to be aeroplanes and as I got the cheaper kits that produced the smaller models I used to really struggle handling the very small parts. That was once I broke them of those frames all the bits were fixed to and I correctly identified the right part, but me biggest problem was always with the glue.
I think I just put to much on and I swear the glue in my boxes was plastic melting glue as it always seemed to melt the hole bigger some very small part had to be fitted in too. Another problem was I was to inpatient to let one part set before I wanted to stick on another part with the end result bits I put on earlier fell off.
Yes my models ended up looking a right mess and while I had those little paint pots to paint the finished model I never used any as my finished model was not worth painting full stop.
So did you love making models from airfix kits? And if so were you any good and what was you best model you built? Do you still have one you made all those years ago?
I have always fancied owning some model of a big ship and while some can be found that are not to expensive, they never look that good and if you want one that really looks fantastic you have to pay a fair old price for one.
Below are a few models that were on display at this years Torbay steam rally, would really have loved to have taken one of these home with
