The record speaks for Itself. we just seem unable to play really well In front Of the TV camera's.
We have won only four times — one of them was a BBC-covered FA Cup tie against Yeovil Town (4-1) — drawn four times and lost seven. There has been the odd game, where I felt we played well and look a half decent team, but In so many games I think we just looked a poor side, but why?
Do you think that the players just freeze a bit? Or try to hard to look good and end up looking bad. What a shop window the TV games are, for any young player, who hopes to be able to play much higher. So you would think that every player should really be up for the TV games and would want to really show how good they are.
So If you were a player and was about to play your next game watched by thousands on the TV, how would you prepare yourself? what would do to get your mind right for the game?

Who else was saying they never "win on the telly" recently? Oh yes, it was Oxford United...................the team that "never won at home on a Tuesday" either. Come on, do you seriously think this crosses any professional's mind? Other "crap" theories I've heard over the years relate to seagulls sitting (I did say sitting!) on the Plainmoor pitch, playing the "wrong way"during the first half, even in the days of Terry Adlington (who always chose to don either a blue or a red top) whenever the big keeper wore green!

Merse there was a time when playing the wrong way In the first half was considered a major part Of winning or losing the game. I do not know how long this lasted for, but it is something that seems to have just died.
It Is my view that we have struggled in most of the Tv games and looked poor also, If It has nothing to do with the camera's, maybe you could offer another explanation.

Players are human and not automatons that's all. Sometimes they are good, sometimes crap - let's trust that "Sod's Law" decrees that they put on a stormer tomorrow night!

So do you want to have a rethink here Merse can you say we played well and showed the TV fans just how good we were on Saturday. No, we looked nothing like that side, just must be the camera's mate.

It is difficult not to agree with Merse if one fails to look beyond the simple statement about being unable to play really well in front of the TV cameras. I agree with Merse in that I would find it difficult to accept that the mere fact that live TV is present would have a dramatic impact on modern day professionals. However let’s look a bit more into this. In 73 games under PB we have played on every day of the week. In fact less than half of our games have taken place on Saturdays! The details are set out in the table below. As you can see overall PB has a healthy W D L record in all games. He also has a winning record on every day of the week except for Mondays and Thursdays. This, of course, just happens to be when the majority of the TV fixtures have taken place. Check out the second table. Now, if I was the manager or a member of the coaching team I might want to look at how we prepare the team for games on Mondays and Thursdays and perhaps try something different. Of course that is not the whole story. When we are on TV we are generally playing against teams with decent pedigree. In fact of last seasons TV opponents only York finished outside of the top 10 in the BSP. This season only Oxford came into the match with a worse record than us. I would therefore suggest that it is not about the cameras but may well have something to do with preparation, both in terms of the day of the week and the quality of the opponent.

Thank goodness someone's got an intelligent reasoning for this - although I think you're spending too much time at work doing those facts and figures ;D! Bucks has addressed this along your lines and said as much on the introductory footage of Thursday's match broadcast, he tried a different pre-match timetable..........................and we still didn't bloody win!

Once again great charts Andy and don't listen to Merse, they really help to see patterns etc and I know most like seeing information In tables, so thanks for putting them up for us to see.

Players are human and not automatons that's all. Sometimes they are good, sometimes crap - let's trust that "Sod's Law" decrees that they put on a stormer tomorrow night! Well "Sod's Law" decreed that we got half a performance the other night and that Oxford (another team that hardly win in front of the cameras................only their last game I believe) also put on half a performance. Of more interest, reading Chris Hargreaves' "Captain's Blog" on the HE site; I wonder how much his "whack in the ribs" debilitated his performance in the second half and how much that contributed to us giving ground as the opposition ploughed forward? Of more relevance now is whether it will preclude him from either playing or playing as effectively today. Sitting on a coach yesterday and sleeping in a strange hotel bed last night will certainly not do the skipper any favours. I'm sure I recall Bucks scheduling training sessions to get them in line with forthcoming kick offs at the beginning of last season in order to minimise the problems of body clocks not being at their maximum efficiency come match day.......................and I wonder whether for some reason or another, they moved away from that policy.
