Hi John and welcome to the TFF, I'm sure one of our history boys, Jon or Barton Downs will be able to provided the answers when they are next on the forum. Also Timbo may well have the programme and if so hopefully he will add it to this thread.

Extremely lucky with this one because none of the various historical publications contain details of friendly matches. Neither do I maintain records of my own, aside from programmes for games I've watched. Over the years I've missed many a pre-season friendly at Plainmoor but it just happens: Having just finished university in Sheffield (and by which time I would have been delivering potatoes around South Devon) I would have had a special interest in this game. I imagine that's Paul McCullough - a goalkeeper who played for one of the Brixham clubs, Dawlish, Reading and Brentford (7 league appearances). Not sure about Richards or Blackburn.

All that is left for me to add is that Campbell's goal was after 44 minutes, Lawrence's after 57. There was a fire in the grandstand extinguished by Jimmy Dunne. The eleventh post down by Merse on this link tells the tale. www.torquayfansforum.com/index.cgi?board=general&action=display&thread=2981&page=1Mark Richards was an apprentice defensive midfielder who went on to a lengthy Western League career with either Barnstaple or Bideford or possibly both. Can't remember Blackburn - must have been a trialist.

The Cardiff game shown in the programme in the league cup, I seem to remember us winning 1-0 with a Doug Livermore own goal.
I recall being rather scared when several Cardiff fans tried to run our car over after the game.

I didn't attend this game (probably working that day) but the fixture is of interest to me as it was the following season whilst at Sheffield Uni that I started following The Blades as my second team.
Many names in that Sheffield team that I remember including the great Tony Kenworthy and the prolific Keith Edwards who I believe had a fantastic goals to games ratio at United and Hull. Paul Garner was another favouritre of mine - not a big name player but a useful and commited all rounder.

I needed the Torquay Line Up for my latest 'project'. Im putting together every game Keith Edwards played for while at United, with The Blades & Opposition line ups, scorers etc. I have every United line up thats ever been played but I have to find the opposition info for friendlies, County Cups, Testimonials etc. My kids have grown up so instead of watching dire tv with 'er indoors, Im putting together 'books' of my United heroes. Ive finished Tony Currie which took me around 6 months to complete and I really enjoyed doing it and brought back some brilliant memories. I also enjoy visiting other teams forums, where I got a lot of my Currie info from, through kind people like yourselves

Paul Garner was another favouritre of mine - not a big name player but a useful and commited all rounder. Following The Blades has been an up & down rollercoaster Ricardo with not too many ups. Ive seen United [the first and original United by the way] in all 4 Divisions in my time with them. Sadly I no longer go but I do still listen to every game and read as many match reports as I can get hold of. I'm still a Blade and the team is still deep in my heart but unfortunatley I despise todays game. I started going in 1974 and last went to The Lane in 1998, Ive done 75 different grounds with United mainly through the 80's. I was lucky enough to see the last 2 seasons of the legend that is Tony Currie. The players you mention are all in my Heroes list, alongside Woodward, Deane, Agana, Colin Morris, Sabella, Trusson, John Tudor [who I never saw play for us but have since read about. 30 goals in 64 League games] my Heroes list is endless. Edwards played 293 games for United in his 2 spells at the club and scored 170 goals, he now drives a lorry for a living and is the co commentator on United games on Radio Sheffield. Kenworthy played 350 games for us and was a brilliant no nonsense defender who i'd love to see play against some of the pampered idiots that make millions in todays game. Paul Garner was an excellent servant to the club who played over 300 games between 1975 to 1984, like you correctly say Ricardo, he wasnt a big name player, but he gave his all for the cause. Thanks again to everyone who replied and for your kind help, and good luck for the rest of this season UTB JT

the first and original United by the way I'll have to let you have that one. I think the order is: 1. Sheffield United 2. Newcastle United 3. Torquay United All well ahead of those johnny-come-latelys from Manchester. Of course the legendary Tony Currie ended up at Torquay United! It is sad to see that the disenchantment with "modern football" stretches beyond the Premier League. I thank my lucky stars that we at Plainmoor can still stand on terracing to watch a Football League match at a reasonable price.

Still living locally in Shiphay I believe and earning a living as a painter and decorator and a one time (maybe still is) frequenter of Chelstons' better half's favourite pub!

Thanks for that Crispy. I've seen the signwritten van parked up in the Rougemont / Grosvenor area and wondered if it was the footballer. Next time you see him, ask him if it was Barnstaple or Bideford or both!
