I’m really having trouble trying to understand why the refs in the Scotland league are still going on strike on Saturday. Refs are always going to be subject to abuse and claims they cheated and that’s how it has always been hasn’t it?
Reading the latest on the story it looks to me everything they have asked for has been near enough met and so I can only think they are trying to show how the game needs them and what happens if they decide to take such action.
Is that the way to earn respect? It will be the fans and sponsors and the clubs who suffer and while everyone has a right to with hold their labour, in this case I really feel they should not be doing that.
It one report I read it said things came to a head after referee Dougie McDonald admitted to lying to Celtic manager Neil Lennon about how he and his assistant referee Steven Craven came to overturn a penalty decision for Celtic at Tannadice against Dundee United on 17 October.
The SFA subsequently censured McDonald for his handling of the post-match administrative process, although McDonald has resisted calls, notably from Celtic, for him to resign.
I really would love someone to explain to me why that event brought things to a head, as I’m struggling with it.
Should refs be allowed to go on strike? And how would you feel if say this Saturdays FA Cup game was called off due to a ref’s strike.

I’m really having trouble trying to understand why the refs in the Scotland league are still going on strike on Saturday. Refs are always going to be subject to abuse and claims they cheated and that’s how it has always been hasn’t it? It strikes me this is as much about the Old Firm’s stranglehold over Scottish football as it is about anything else. For decades the perception from Celtic has been that many referees are biased in favour of Rangers ( “they’re all ****ing Masons!”), this view being linked to historic anti-Catholic discrimination in the West of Scotland. The rest of Scottish football, for its part, most likely sees officials as favouring the Old Firm in general . And, given a disproportionate chunk of the population supports one of the Old Firm clubs (more of them Rangers than Celtic), it’s easy to jump to the conclusion that referees – as consenting Scottish adults - are caught up in the whole Old Firm business. I stress the words perception and easy to jump to the conclusion but, unfortunately, conspiracy theories - and sectarianism - go together in Scottish football. And, wherever a referee may live in Scotland, the bigots are not far away. Billy Boys, Bully Boys and rebel songs....I think it’s a great shame but how will it ever change?
