We had an inferiority complex even then! Read on... This doesn't say what competition it is for but I'm assuming as the two clubs are fielding reserve teams in this fixture and both were members of the Western league in this season this is what it is for? Just need someone, you know who you are, to fill in the relevant details of the match. (Since done... Thanks boys for doing that...) Note how the reserve programme format has changed from the Supporters Club financed copies of a few years previously to the typed & copied affair at this game. One of the most interesting points is in the last paragraph where, considering this would've been a game watched by die-hard United fans, it states that maybe as the first-team are doing well supporters may want to come along and see them in action despite the apparently more attractive prospect of watching either Argyle or City!

I was at that game and it was a Western Counties Floolight League fixture which we won 7-1 and Robin Stubbs got 6 of them!

That looks a very strong team for a floodlit league fixture but - if that's the team which took the field - it showed seven changes from the previous Saturday. United were enjoying a good run - four league wins in a row - although Robin Stubbs had missed the last five games.
Two Gloucestershire cricketers in the Cheltenham side - Ron Nicholls and Bobby Etheridge.

Definitely W.C.F.League Barton and I was at the game as well and was just about to respond when I spotted Merse got in first again. Good lad he is! It was of course an official first team competition and we certainly started the season that way, although later we had a mix of first team and reserves and at the end I think it all fell into disrepute as some teams (I think including us) didn't complete our fixtures! Oh well ... ages ago now!

Definitely W.C.F.League Barton and I was at the game as well Sorry, Stefano, I wasn't doubting it was in the WCFL. More a case of initially thinking it was impressively near full-strength when - after closer inspection - it was quite different from the previous Div 4 game. A reflection of the depth of what was, after all, a promotion-winning squad. No wonder, with a bigger prize in sight, we slipped a little from fielding strong teams in this competition later in the season! All before my time of course..... Would you have been there as a matter of routine or because the game drew extra attention because of the Return of Robin after a lay-off? (not that I'm questioning your loyalty to the cause). Perhaps there's an WCFL attendance spreadsheet out there in a far-flung corner of Torquay...

In those days Barton if there was a first team game on then I was there and I know Merse was the same. I also used to often travel on the bus at that time to watch the reserves in the Western League and the reason in todays high tech environment will sound unbelievable! In those days there was no way of knowing how we were getting on away from home so we went to the reserve games to see the man walk down to the 'half time scoreboard' situated at the Babbacombe end (normally about 65 minutes into the reserve game) and put up the scores. Was it better days? Do you know I sometimes think it was!!

Thanks Merse, Stefano et al for providing the details. Isn't it strange how it isn't mentioned on the programme itself?
I have posted, in the sixties archive room, another programme for this competition for the away game at Poole a week later. What a difference... Their programme was colourful (in comparison) and was a proper 12 page affair with adverts, manager's notes, team biogs etc...

Perhaps there's an WCFL attendance spreadsheet out there in a far-flung corner of Torquay... There are a few attendances on www.tufchistory.co.ukOur first home game was 2,648 v Exeter. Our last was 235 v Bath. I see we scored eleven goals in our first two games, but then just seven in the next eleven.
