As highlighted by Merse for the 1963 programme,Kevin Hector is the name that stands out as a player who went on to greater things. Among the players mentioned for this 1965 fixture I do remember Bobby Ham now that I see his name mentioned. With a little investigation I see that he was still turning out for Bradford City up until 1975, thereby explaining why I can recall the name. www.bantamspast.co.uk/frontroom/bobby_ham.html Should Merse experience his usual difficulties with Radio Devon this coming Saturday afternoon maybe he should try to log on to 'Bradford Community Broadcastings' as Bobby may well be helping to relay the action from Plainmoor.

Bobby was a fine payer as was Ronnie Bird who later went to Cardiff City and even later to Southern League Hereford United if I remember correctly and without research after all these years. Two other names with Torquay United connections later in their careers that stand out from those Park Avenue lineups in this weeks reproductions are Tommy Spratt and Jim Fryatt...................both prolific scorers in their time at Plainmoor under Frank O'Farrell ~ Fryatt of course, coming to us as the then record holder of the "fastest goal ever scored in League football" 8 seconds after the start of the Bradford P.A. v Tranmere Rovers game on April 45th 1964! Big Jim finally ended a long and multi clubbed career in football as Assistant Manager of Las Vegas Quicksilver FC and then worked in casinos and finally on golf courses in that city. His son Edward Fryatt is the well known PGA Tour golfer who was born in Rochdale in 1971 ~ Edward being his father's second name.

Ed Fryatt - now there is a name I remember from my early days reporting on golf back at the end of the 20th Century and early 21st. Won a few times on the Asian and lower US Tours but never really made it to the top and retired seven years ago.
Now an insurance salesman in Las Vegas of all places!

A very interesting little article and just the sort of character who lends gravitas to the board of a professional football club. I would dispute the (probably inadvertant) claim that he made his League debut at the age of 10 however!

Jim Fryatt......................probably the most powerful header of a ball I have ever seen. Once in a game against Workington in 1967 (5-0, I seem to recall) he headed tha ball against the bar at the Mini Stand end from the "D" with such force it rebounded staright to his feet!

You are just getting used to our opponents always scoring nil!! ;D

I remember the game quite well and it was at a time when we were coming into a rich period of form and pushing towards a second successive promotion. However I cannot remember Tommy Spratt playing for them in that game (albeit of course that does not mean he didn't) In our promotion season the previous year he was the only player to play in all 46 league games, but he got the usual amount of abuse from the gurning fans we have and probably decided to leave. It wasn't pre-season he left though as I definitely remember him playing for us on our promotion. I am fairly sure he played in our first game back in Division 3 (League 1 now) in a 3-0 win against Reading. Maybe the problem was that having been the top scorer in our promotion season he could not steal a goal when we got promoted (just one from the penalty spot I think when we stuffed Walsall 5-2 and Robin Stubbs scored the other four whilst being marked by my Dad's namesake!). Or did the gurners put him off? He,like Reg Jenkins, was a good player who was never given a chance by the small amount of idiotic supporters we have. Well, that's what I think anyway
