Many will remember the very sad day a few years ago, when a fire broke out in the giraffe house at Paignton zoo. Three giraffes died, the mother and her one week old baby, then a week later Paddy the father giraffe.
I know Jim was broken hearted over the lose of those very fine and beautiful animals and It still deeply hurts him.
The zoo was able to get one giraffe some time later and has had two more lined up and waiting to join the one already here. Sadly they were in an area that had blue tongue and were not allowed to travel from there to here.
Well today they have finally arrived and how great to see and hear JimD on the TV, looking fine and dandy and very happy. Its also good to see the changes that have been made in the heating, to ensure that nothing like that could ever happen again.
The very best news Of the week, no month, no the whole year.

It will be while yet Dave. the girls arnt quite old enough yet (no one has told Yoda this though!!) and the gestation period is 16 months. So a couple of years at least before babies are around. What will come first.......giraffe babies at the zoo or Torquay back in the league?

After that very sad day Jim, that will live with most who love the Zoo and at the risk Of getting flack on here, If It was one Of the other, I would go for the babies.

I do have one question I would love to know the answer too about our zoo.Todays zoo are all about conservation etc, now at Bristol zoo last September, I saw new baby gorilla's as they have a male and two females.
So why Is It at Paignton zoo all our gorilla's are boys ???I do not want any gay jokes ;D but I really would like to know why.

Zoos needed a zoo to hold spare males until they are needed to mate with suitable females. We were asked to be this zoo. Although breeding them would have been fantastic, a holding zoo for males really was needed, so for the greater good we agreed to hold the males.

We dont just watch stuart, you wouldn't believe the things we sometimes have to do. I once watched a team collect semen from an elephant. It looked very hard work!!!
