And there is more good news.
I hear that the Youth team won their FA Youth Cup match 2-0 at Bridgwater tonight.
How fantastic to see us taking part in and making progress in this competition. Well done to all involved and to Sean for putting up the cash!
I see that the Youth team is playing Exeter at Painmoor at 11 on Saturday - free admission. I know you don't run a youth team expecting to attract a big crowd, but it would be good if some of those who can't make it to Wrexham could cheer the boys on - and maybe boost the turnover at the Gulls' Nest!

Good news Indeed, I was hoping that we could get one Of the team as a member on here and was prepared to set up a Youth Team board, were we could have updates and match reports.

We lost to Exeter 1-0.
Unfortunately, it was a bad error by the keeper who otherwise had a good game.
Very impressed with the big centre half - Pryse I think. Striker Charan (??) looked lively.
At the risk of repeating myself, it is fantastic that we have a youth team and well done to Matt and Comps for putting together a team more than capable of holding its own at a decent level. Progress has been quicker than I expected
Nice to see the Bristowes there supporting the boys - I expect our other big benefactors are en route to Wrexham.

Seeing as they're all locally sourced and a "year young" for this league, they must be developing well....................and development takes priority over results! I hear the gate was 250, that's better than some Conference 1 clubs get for their first team!

Also much better than our reserve team often got as well, so It Is good to see that people are turning up to watch them play.In time I'm sure we will see the real benefits of having a youth set up running again.

Noticed a link to highlights of the Exeter game on .net, though won't post it in case it causes any bother. Like Jon and others, it really makes me feel that much better about my club that we have the beginnings of potentially promising Youth set-up. Disgraceful that it was evwer let go. And fair play Sean, for stumping up for such a cause when others might just flash it on shirt sponsorship or the like. ;D

It was nice to see Jon at the game on Saturday, but what was even nicer (sorry Jon) was to see the progress these young gentlemen are making.
The difference between the first time I saw them (back in pre-season) and last weekend was marked and it is obvious to me they are benefitting from playing against opposition a year or so (maybe two on occasion) older than them.
Unlike previous (end of the Bateson youth team era springs to mind) incarnations of the youth setup, this one has a great deal of promise in my opinion. These teenagers look stronger, fitter and have a great deal more skill, and it made me smile when I heard Paul Compton (you can't miss his voice) shout pass, pass, pass, pass, pass ad infinitum rather than some of the 'coaching' I have seen at that level, like the crap half-time team-talk I was privvy to on a cold day outside Gillingham when Richard Hancox was in charge of the youth team for what I think was an FA Youth Cup tie that myself, Merse and a few other Capital Gulls took in around four orfive years ago - the likes of Jimmy Benefield, Graham Killoughery and Scott Corderoy were in the youth team back then for those of you in the knowledge! All that included was brickbats for the players who had not performed and nothing in the way of tactical help for them. It came as no surprise at all when the performance did not improve after half-time, since Hancox offered absolutely nothing in the way of coaching help. Now I hope it is much different, and on Saturday's evidence I know it is. Compo may not be everyone's cup of tea, but if he plays bad cop to Matt Williams' good cop, then that's a pairing that could just work.
It really was a shame for keeper Grant Fisher that his howler cost TUFC the chance of victory against a very sound bunch of opponents, because his handling of the back four impressed me a great deal. That he bares a resemblence to Martin Rice physically is a worry, but I would imagine he has three more years to grow into his body and he might be nearer Scott Bevan if he has a growth spurt sometime.
Ashley Yeoman obviously has talent galore, but I hope the coaches don't mess him around too much, mixing playing him up front, in central midfield and wide on the right (where he played and had an impact on Saturday).
Of the rest, Joe Pryse could develop into a commanding centre-back in the Matt Elliott mould (he also looks a little like him), although others compared him to Carl Airey and Jody Banim because he might not be the most lithe 16-year-old in football. Cameron Kelly (son of Tom, who was in the crowd) continues to show promise but I was actually most impressed with Ryan Beattie, a ball-winning midfielder who must be well over 6-foot already and could develop into a smashing player with a bit more composure with the ball at his feet.
I'm hoping to get another chance to see them play at Plainmoor before I head back to London next month, but if any of you get the chance to see them play after then, go and cheer them on. You could see the lift they got from having a decent crowd watching them last weekend and they could be, to borrow Romford Kev's words, the future of the club.
And adding to the praise for Sean for his backing of the setup - kudos old buddy!

The stand out player that day was Nyron Noseworthy and I well remember talking to one of the Gills' staff and mentioning how good he looked to which the guy answered along the lines of (a little tongue in cheek) "you don't want to be looking at him, he's crap" - I guess they get rather insecure at youth games when people ask questions! I remember too another youth game down at Griffin Park when a certain player impressed us and Romford called to him "hey mate, what's your name?" to which he stopped playing, came over to the touchline and told us (can't remember it now)...............I think we made his evening!

Would have to have been a lot longer than 6 years ago to be Nosworthy mate - he's 30 now and would have had to be a much over-aged player to play in that game.

Can you remember the exact year we went to Gillingham for that game? Nyron Nosworthy won't be 28 until later this month...................he joined Gillingham from school in Brixton when he was 18.

I can only do rudimentary maths up to 20 so yes, granted, Nyron is only 27 until next weekend.
But Graham Killoughery, who definitely played in that game, wasn't born until 1984 (July 22), so I doubt both would have ever played in the same age group unless one was playing at an extremely young age or one as an over-age player.
I'd put the game in 2002, six years ago, meaning Nosworthy would have been 20/21 and ineligible for the FA Youth Cup, which I believe was the competition the game was played in. Nosworthy was in the Gillingham first team as early as 1998 and a regular by 2000/1.
Bricey or Rev Hughes would be able to tell us the date, but I would rate the chances of Nosworthy having played in that game, unlike me, as slim.

Thanks for your review on the youth team Andy, It really Is good to see it being run in such a professional way, sure It will only be time before we see the real benefits from having It. Yes well done Sean, hope you will keep it going for years to come.
