Result: 3-0 (Atkinson,Cox,Stubbs) Attendance: 4683. That's one of those games from long ago that I can remember as though it were yesterday. Colchester were a division above us but we murdered them that night with a really attractive attacking display. Didn't go far mind, I think we lost to Notts County at home 2-1 in the next round with their team including Jeff Astle who went on to score the winning goal for WBA in the 1968 FA Cup Final against Everton. By coincidence we were then drawn against Colchester in the 2nd Round of the FA Cup later that season. Not as good as the League Cup tie and all very tense, but a Robin Stubbs strike from about 40 yards in the last minute sealed a 2-0 win and a date with destiny on 9 January 1965...... Jimmy Greaves et al hanging on for their lives in that unforgettable 3-3 draw with the mighty Spurs. Although I would agree with the view that our new grandstand should be named The Paul Bristow Stand, perhaps we should rename the away end The Cyril Knowles stand in memory of our future manager desperately hoofing the ball away defending that end against a yellow tide of Adlington, Smith, Allen, Benson, Bettany, Wolstenholme, Atkinson, Cox, Stubbs, Northcott and Somers ;D
