I went to the Yeovil Vs Exeter game last night with the guys I work with, big Yeovil fans. Obviously I could sympathise with them as I also wanted to see Exeter get soundly beaten.
Just prior to the game there was a minute’s applause for Adam Stansfield and for the first 5 minutes or so both sets of fans joined in with a “there’s only 1 Adam Stansfield” and regardless of your views on it, it was enough to make the hairs on the back of your neck stand up.
The game itself was quite entertaining, 4 good goals, a sending off and a few feisty moments. Both teams fielding pretty much the same starting lines up from last Saturdays games. The Yeovil team was also similar to the team we played in the PSF.
The main thing I took from the game is that if we were to play either of these teams I would back us to win it. Neither team overly impressed and I can honestly say that out of the 27 players who featured at various points, there is only TWO that I would expect/want to get into our team. That was Ryan Harley & Jamie Cureton.
Harley pulls ALL of Exeter’s strings, pretty much everything goes through him. He looks a class act and I can see why he is rated so highly, HOWEVER, I can also see why maybe he hasn’t been snapped up by anyone so far. Without wishing to stir up another Hornets nest, but here is a player who actually does LOOK lazy, obviously he isn’t but he doesn’t track back, barely makes a tackle, disappears for periods, but ALWAYS seems to pop up in the right place at the right time, although he was a bit MIA (Missing In Action) when Yeovil had the upper hand for 30 minutes after half time. Naturally Gifted and a player who looks like he could play at a much higher level.
Cureton has pace, over 10 yards, is skillfull and can finish. 2 very well taken goals and he ran the sluggish Yeovil centre halves ragged all game. His second goal really was a sweet strike.
Funny old game, Exeter dominated the first half and scored early. The game changed just before half time when a rather odd incident led to a Yeovil player being sent off. An Exeter player fouled a Yeovil player, the ref waved advantage, Yeovil player is then brought down in the box, everyone expects a penalty but the ref goes back to the spot of the first foul. The resulting free kick is smashed into the wall, an Exeter player gets to the ball first however he is taken out by a Yeovil guy and all hell breaks out. Fists flying and apparently a head butt. I thought the ref would have sent at least one from each side, but he singled out one Yeovil player. Ironically for the first half hour of the second half the 10 men of Yeovil were much the better side and after clawing back an equaliser should have shut up shop, however almost from the restart Exeter broke down the right a nice cross was met by an unmarked Cureton to neatly volley home from 15 yards. Harley then put the icing on the cake with a sublime free kick from 25 yards which the keeper never even moved for.
Overall, Exeter slightly the better side but neither team showed enough for me to think that we couldn’t beat them.
Jake Thomson came on after 50 minutes, but didn’t get into the game at all. Also went AWOL for long periods. On that performance he wouldn’t even make our bench at the moment.
Jones, their keeper has never impressed me. I thought he looked a bit suspect in the games we played against Exeter 3 years ago. He fumbled a few last night and I would be disappointed if Bevan allowed a goal like theirs. When you see nervous performances like this you then realise how good your own keeper is.
For me in the next round, bring on Exeter Home or Away.
