Fabio Capello was at Goodison Park yesterday and the big speculation has been that Mikel Arteta might be in line for a call to the England side.
Should we be considering the likes of Arteta? We seem to be ok with it in other sports. Names like Kevin Pietersen, Jon Trott, Andy Caddick, Lesley Vainukolo, the Paul brothers, Allan Lamb and Robin Smith come to mind.
If Arteta were English would he be in contention for a England spot? You would have to say it's possible. Personally speaking if players actually want to play for England then who cares where they come from? I think there are few English players with Arteta's technique. We'd be foolish not to take advantage just because he's chosen to spend much of his career in the British Isles and he can't get a game for Spain because of their embarassment of riches. It's no worse than Kevin Pietersen's situation.
I do laugh at suggestions that fellow Spaniard Manuel Almunia is also eligible for the English national team. I think I'd rather have a blindfolded Robert Green. Keep dreaming Arsene, you haven't got a blindspot for goalkeepers have you now?
