A printed document has come into my possession and is one that will change the history of both our club and the FA Cup.
This piece of history seems to have been placed in the national archives back in the early seventies and has only now surfaced. It seems that there has been a great cover-up. Why? Who knows. Maybe after the ending of the War a small club like ours defeating the might of Tottenham Hotspur at the home of football was immediately frowned upon and the episode wiped from the record books.
But I have written proof in this signed and printed document, complete with pictures, that illustrate this feat and which show, without doubt, that, yes, the Magpies from Devon won the FA Cup at Wembley in the first season after the end of World War Two.
The author of this piece is a well-known historian and so his words have to be taken seriously, especially as he has deemed it so important he actually signed it in his own handwriting.
As I taster from the ‘document’ that I have managed to get my hands on I am able to set out a summary of what is written within.
If there is any interest I may post the whole thing on here complete with the aforementioned pictures.
‘…the newcomer made a sensational contribution to the Magpies rise in the League Table and their success in the Cup Rounds’.
‘Director: “that was a fine win on Saturday. We’ve only two more hurdles to jump into the Cup Final. At long last we’re really sitting on the sunny side of the English soccer street”’.
‘During February and March the Magpies were astounding all the sportswriters by emerging as the ‘giant-killers’ of the League Division One teams in the Sixth Round and the Semi-Final of the Cup Draw’.
‘Cup Final Day, The Magpies from the West were making their first appearance at Wembley against the better-known London club Tottenham Hotspur for that supreme award, The English Cup’.
‘The manager: “If you only keep cool heads and play to the whistle you’ve a good chance of beating the Spurs. Try to remember that the whole of Devon is waiting for you to bring back The Cup. Do your best, I wish you luck with your goal shots today”’.
‘The Magpies will be getting a great welcome in Devon tomorrow and Westcountry fans will be staring at the FA Cup with smiling eyes’.
