In my best poster of the week post I made this evening, I mentioned about a lady who lived in the care home Carol works in sadly passing away this morning. And there is a very sad tale to tell about the last few weeks of her life and how because she was such a religious person feared going to heaven when you would think it was the place she would want to go.
Carol told me that she was such a lovely lady and someone who always smiled no matter what, the same can’t be said for some old ladies at the home as some can be so very difficult, spiteful and will even try to lash out to hurt those who are doing their best to make the end of their lives as good as they can be.
The lady has lived at the home a number of years and just before Carol went on holiday she made arrangements for the lady to go into hospital as she was very unwell. Last Friday while we were in Bovey Tracey Carol received a call on her mobile saying the lady had been brought back to the home to die in her own bed and was not expected to last the weekend.
When Carol went to work on Monday the lady while very ill was still hanging on and fighting as hard as she could to stay alive and yet she knew her time had come and she had to let go but fear of going to heaven was making her last days on earth a very terrible time for her.
Carol came home from work on Wednesday and told me how she spent as much time as she could with the lady, holding her hand and trying to reassure her she had nothing to fear going up to heaven where she would meet her god that she had believed in and worshiped all her life..
So why was she so afraid to go to heaven? Well her husband died many years ago and he was a very nasty piece of work, he had subjected her to appalling physical violence all her life along with metal cruelty and when he died she really must have felt god had answered her prayers.
Because she is so deeply religious she believed that god would have forgiven her husband for his terrible sins and would have let him in and she was so very afraid he would be up their waiting for her so he could carry on abusing her again.
Carol told me how she kept telling the lady that as her husband was so bad god would not have got the chance to forgive him as the devil would have claimed his soul the second he died as he was such an evil man,
Today just before she died she looked up as if she was looking up to heaven and a smile came over her face and then she was gone, Carol was called up to her room and one by one all the other care workers who were there came up to say their good byes to this dear old lady. Each and everyone cried and that set Carol off big time and while you hear sometimes of bad carers in homes, most of them really do care so much about the people they are looking after and anyone who has an elderly family member in a home, should take comfort from the fact those looking after them also care very much for them.
While Carol was sad she was also happy as she believes the lady asked god the second before she went if her husband was up there waiting for her and he replied he was in hell where he belonged. So she was happy to let go of her life on earth and believe she was going to carry it on in heaven and still be free from the terrible abuse she had suffered all her married life.
A sad story and one that shows the power of believing and as the title of this thread states, the fear that can bring.
