A brilliant report from 1899 Jon but has anybody got the programme? . Lovely use of language and as it all sounded so familiar to me I was wondering if I may have been there as a spectator. Anybody know where they mean by 'the Teignmouth Road ground' mentioned at the end of the article for their forthcoming game against Upton? Steppes Cross (not sure of spelling!), St George V (I think that's the right King), Easterfield Lane above said Regal fields, or somewhere that has been built on since?

I think Timbo got outbid for it on e-bay. Bill Luscombe wrote in 1948 that the Teignmouth Road field "has long since been built on, the only remaining portion being the pathway that leads to Stantaway Hill". That's the part of Teignmouth Road that leads from Cricketfield Road down towards the back of the old Grammar School - whoops, sorry Chelston! Of course, Mr Luscombe's memory was always a bit suspect ever since he got viciously "legged up" at Bovey Tracey. United only played at Teignmouth Road for one season before moving on to the Recreation Ground.
