Rooney's already had a kick on the ankle, what good would a "kick up the backside" [/b]do him in heaven's sake? [/quote] Nothing annoys me more than the assumption that everything in football can be resolved by a "kick up the backside/extra training"[/b] etc. Every player is an individual with his own energy levels, his own pain threshold, his own form and his own fatigue factors. Sometimes, and quite often; less training can be the most beneficial road to take, and particularly once you get past the end of winter when rest and recovery is far more beneficial and the regular path taken by professional squads. These players have had very little rest and recovery time since pre-season started for them all almost a year ago, and Wayne Rooney is the prime example of someone who was absolutely "bombing" in the late winter/spring; but no athletes body in the world can keep that momentum up for long periods without a phase of "settling back" and the need to "soft peddle". It's like the Tour de France rider's need to "piano" as they call it ~ reduce the tempo for a few days after a burst of hight effort in order to get through the three weeks and make it to Paris. Wayne Rooney will need nursing through this World Cup.................. "a kick up the backside" my arse!

I think with Joe Cole in the side we`ll have a better of scoring when we go forward; if we play Crouch that will; add presense and make it harder for thier keeper and defense who don`t seem confident when defending set-pieces and corners. Rooney could do with a kick up the backside in my opinion. Lennon or Wright-Phillips on the right would be good as well. I would go with Wright-Phillips myself. So now we've got a line up that functions, you'd make three changes? Wonderful Rooney's already had a kick on the ankle, what good would a "kick up the backside" do him in heaven's sake? Milner provided the whipped in balls that strikers thrive on that have been missing since the days of Beckham in his pomp, so you'd leave him out huh? Once such ball lead to the goal for Christ's sake! I'm sure Crouch for our only world class player or our match winning striker would be right up Deutchland's Strasse.................it wouldn't be a case of presence but presents if you were picking the team. No point playing Crouch. He'd be cancelled out by Per Mertesacker who's about the same height and better in the air. I hope Don Fabio keeps the same side. The only debate would be either start again with Upson or Carragher. I hope he keeps faith with Upson. As for the others I thought the midfield looked nicely balanced yesterday. Gerrard was pretty creative on the left and hit some magnificent crossfield passes. Milner doesn't deserved to be dropped either. Barry will get fitter and fitter but I hope he doesn't give the ball away as much as he did yesterday. Rooney is almost there I think. I'm quite confident that we'll beat this German side but we're going to have to play better. I think the experience will help as the German midfield will miss Michael Ballack. Gareth Barry will have a job picking up Ozil. But win we can and win we should.

I see what you are saying Merse and agree to an extent but I do think when he has been playing for England Rooney amounst other players don`t seem that interested in the game. Obvously everyone had a nightmare against Algeria and we seen a little improvement against Slovenia but against Germany we are going to come undone in my opinion. We dont show any commitment or effort and we cant play any good attacking football. Upfront we are useless, Rooney cant score for England and who ever plays along side Rooney dosen`t really get anything else.
We have a great team of individuals but they cant play as a team. I think we could take the game agaisnt Germany to penalties if we are lucky but I dont think it will happen. We`ll probably get stuffed and play poorly as usual.

OK I'll bite - Milner is a must for me. Joe Cole is fantastic as a sub against a tiring team but I'd be reticent to start with him. There are doubts about Rooney's fitness and if these are proved true, I would go with Defoe up front with Gerrard behind. Rooney has seemed a shadow of himself so far but, if we progess, he would be invaluable against Argentina. Our defence is shaky and slow and, so, I hope we go out and play and aggressive, attacking and pressing. At least Italy and France are out already so we won't look so bad when we lose on the inevitable penalties! At the end of the day Capello will go with what he sees on the training ground. I just hope the players give it a go - they finally did against Slovenia but were still poor - will a better opposition spur them on more? Remember that Germany are a young team and if our 'experienced' 'pros' can't beat them then we should forget them all and build for the 2016 Euros coz we're still going no where. James Milner - key man imo.

I think to accuse a player who wears his heart on his sleeve like Wayne Rooney as not seeming "that interested in the game" is an attack on his integrity and ridiculous. Yes, you can easily see when he is frustrated, yes it is easy to spot his disappointment; and obviously he readily shows his anger..................where does that even remotely get confused with "disinterest"? "Can't play as a team" ? What was that we saw yesterday then, if it wasn't playing as a team?

I did also see a team that didnt deserve to even et a point against Algeria a team that didn`t really do much more than just show up. I do want England to beat the hell out of Germany but think we`ll be really up against it. We`ve been barely getting anything against USA, Algeria and Slovenia, how are we going to get anything against Germany.

We have a great team of individuals but they cant play as a team.. Not sure what game you watched yesterday, but in the game I watched I saw an England team play as a team, play and work hard for each other and as a result won the game. I'm not sure if they were playing for the manager or their own personal pride and while there was plenty of room for improvement, they played a whole lot better and with more pride and passion then they did in the first two games. Even Terry was able to restore some respect in himself with the fans as he threw himself in front of shots to ensure we held onto our one goal lead. If the team play with the same passion and desire on Sunday we have every chance of beating Germany and I believe we will do just that.

The Slovenia game, the players shown a bit of improvement but not e nough that will get much futher in the tournament, it hurts me to say it but I don`t think as a team we`ll win it. If we learnt to play as a proper and more fluent team then maybe but we haven`t learnt that yet.
We shown in the Sovenia game that we can win by playing ok. That was how I saw the game overall. Good in some places and ok in the rest. Lennons cross for Defoe was excellent and spot on, I dont think David Beckham could have done much better. But we need to remember we are now playing Germany, not Slovenia or Algeria. If we want to win the world cup we`ll have to beat the best in the world and I don`t think we will.

Pappy, YOU need to remember that Aaron Lennon didn't play against Slovenia..................the player you seem to think was Lennon was called James Milner ~ he has the name on his back and a different number; not difficult to spot and you'll need to do better than that to give your argument credence.

I'm with capitalgull. The only change I expect to be contemplated is Carragher back for Upson. I also hope he keeps faith in Upson. James Milner was outstanding against Slovenia and must keep his place.

Great stuff Stuart.................Frank Skinner's looking young these days isn't he! Calvin & I are practising "Three Lions" daily and it'll be played just before the game on Sunday. He's got his red England kit already too and I'll post a picture of him on my blog when the game comes round. He knows something's going on although he can't quite work out what. Just imagine if we won the World Cup and when he grew up he would have been too young to have any memory of it! We're popping up the road shortly for the Bergkamp ~ Cruyff Trophy Tournament being held on the Cruyff Court in Elthorne Park near our home.................it's held annually; alternately in London and Amsterdam ~ this year it's a four sided 5-a-Side affair with under 11 teams representing Arsenal Advanced Soccer Schools (Arsenal Development) A Class Football Foundation, Islington Schools and Cruyff Academy from Amsterdam. The court was opened courtesy of a £75,000 donation from Dennis Bergkamp out of his testimonial proceeds as a mark of his appreciation of the people of Islington and his gratitude for the warm welcome he and his family always receive when they are in the neighbourhood. I was privileged to participate in that opening, and drove Johann Cruyff and Robin van Persie that day. Nice people the Bergkamps........................they retain a home at Goff's Oak, and three of their four children were born in London. Another fine example of the quiet and sincere way many football stars conduct their lives ~ a way that usually goes unreported in the press. No doubt they will be there today and I'm hoping the great Cruyfff will be there too if he is not in South Africa.
