Honestly I dont really know what to think or expect for the game against Slovenia next Wednesday. If we keep playing like we are I dont think anything more than a draw.
If we do get through then we can start a fresh.
My thoughts on the team are that James should continue in goal with Lampard and Gerrard in the middle. Playing Gerrard on the left dosen`t work, he was ineffective in that position against Algeria.
I would put Lennon on the right with Wright-Phillips on the left that way we have pace on both wings, both player in my opinion can beat thier opposite players and cause problems all the time.
Crouch cold do well maybe with Rooney or Heskey and with Scouser Jamie out for the Slovenia game I think Dawson will be te new centre-back partner for John Terry, Dawson has had a good season with Tottenham Hotspur.
I think we aren`t working as a team which needs to be addressed. We need that passion back, that desire to put effort into helping your team-mates out.
There was a time when we played not for personnel gain but for each other. There is a phrase that no matter how good or strong you are as an individual but only as strong as your weakest player. We need to protect each other, play off each others strengths like Lennons/Wright-Phillips pace or Rooneys aggresiveness, James experince.
Against Slovenia I would `hope` we win, what I expect in the game I honestly don`t know yet. I may make a decision on that front when I see how the players and Fabio repsond in the next few days, when I get a feeling for the mood of the camp.
But I will say this I will support the team though, I wont stop shouting "Come On England" at the big screen inside Upton Vale Baptist Church or singing and dancing with my mates. I look at everything in positive ways (Though I always look at where we went wrong and were we could improve) and I`ll be taking my England horn and military hat to the Slovenia game.
What areyour thoughts on the up-coming game with Slovenia, do you think we`ll show any passion at all? Any grit? Any character? Will we show up as it were and show that we are the country that invented football? The country that gave the world a language that everyone can speak?
We would need show that we can work as a team, that those matches agaisnt USA and Algeria were games that have been put behind us, game that we havent forgotton but learned from.
We need to improve our attack line, we can create some good moves but simply (well not simply, maybe the wrong word) in the wrong area of te pitch. We can get past some players but ened to put the ball infront of Rooney not leave im streatcing back towards David James for the ball and we need to be more confident to take power shots at the `keeper make him know we are there and arent tere to messed around.

I still maintain it's not a question of pride or passion, but of confidence ~ confidence in themselves as indiviuals and in their team mates as well. That confidence has melted away as it does so often for England in World Cup Finals because the players know in their heart of hearts they are just not technically proficient enough. They know that they are to a certain extent "getting away with it" in our over paid and over cossetted Premiership propped up and baled out by technically superior foreigners. Watch the good players at the top level, and although they can all play "keepy uppy" for ten minutes at a time and perform like circus sea lions; much as the juvenile Soccer AM promotes with the Academy and C of E youngsters on a Saturday morning; the way to play at the top level is to have such a command of the ball and superb first touch with either foot that they know where the ball is going before they get it. They take one touch with their body open and move it on........................ping, ping, ping. To do that you need to be confident in your own ability to hold your own and in your team mates ability to do the same. Somewhere along the road from qualififcation , they have collectively lost that confidence ~ it stands out a mile.

i think the slovenians will turn us over, but sincerely hope they dont, why? because we have no belief in ourselves,as merse quite rightly says, our lot get away with it cushioned in amongst gifted foreign players in the premiership, away from that safe zone our lack of quality shines through.Scotland the same, now a shadow of the country it was footballing wise,it needs to be addressed but will fall on deaf ears.

My thoughts on the team are that James should continue in goal with Lampard and Gerrard in the middle. Playing Gerrard on the left dosen`t work, he was ineffective in that position against Algeria. If you thought Gerrard was playing on the left then you can't have been watching the game closely enough, although neither was ITV commentator Clive Tyldesley as he said the same thing. While Gerrard lines up on the left, he usually start to drift into the middle after 10-15 minutes or so.. This drags his marker inside and creates loads of empty space for Ashley Cole to attack into. For the majority of times in the first half that Cole overlapped, Gerrard was in the middle of the pitch. This didn't work as well in the second half especially as Lennon/SWP kept swopping sides and blocking off that route. If you watch more closely you will see that the vast majority of Gerrard's mis-placed passes came from a pitch-length band with a width about 15 yards either side of the centre spot. He spent a lot of the game alongside Lampard in the middle, in front of Barry. For me, we need to dump either Lampard or Gerrard and bring in Carrick. He's not the most spectacular of players but an effective passer and always aware of the state of the game so his positional play is excellent. Get rid of the brainless wingers and use Joe Cole to add some much-needed skill to the team. Remove Heskey (who had a polar-opposite game compared to his performance against USA) and use Crouch as the "target-man" (at least his ball control is excellent) for Rooney to play off. The defence (including Barry) is fine as long as the players in front of them use the ball intelligently and, more importantly, move it around quickly. Last night's performance really was one of the worst I've seen from England since the WC qualifier against Greece at Old Trafford in 2001 when a whirling-dervish performance from Beckham saved that particular day. Ignore the last-minute free-kick, the rest of the team were appalling for the entire game and he covered almost every blade of grass to try and drag a point out of the game. We needed Gerrard, Lampard or Rooney to do that yesterday, but all three were inept. However, Slovenia shouldn't be under-estimated, if we play like we did yesterday we will lose to them; but if we play against them like we did against USA we will also lose to them.

Its not been very good so far and this really is a must win game if our boys are not going to be coming back home in disgrace as we really should have been good enough to win this group and progress to the next stage of the world cup with no problems.
I heard on the radio there is a meeting planned where the whole squad etc along with coaches and they are going to discuss what has gone wrong and lets hope they come out afterward with some positive answers and ensure they get things right on the pitch.
This game is not going to be an easy game and while we all want England to win it, on the evidence we have seen so far its hard to believe we will win the game.
Not going to be a game for the faint hearted to watch and lets all hope on Wednesday evening we will at least be happy England are still in the world cup, but even if we do win this game, I don't think we are good enough to go much further in the competition.

Which thread to use? One`s already been created but doesn`t matter ;D Anyway, I think maybe a Crouch and Defoe/Heskey partneship will work, Rooney needs to be dropped he is awful for England and being dropped will knock sense into him quite a bit. Lennon on the right and Cole/Wright-Phillips on the left. With Gerrard pushing forward in the middle with Lampard covering the middle. Carracher and Dawson is my centre-back choosing, Cole left-back and Glenn Johnson right-back. Sorry half asleep again have moved my post onto this thread and deleted the other thread. Dave

All that Capello needs to do its to lock them in the hotel and replay Denmark V Cameroon over and over again until they get the message. That was a proper football match. End to end stuff, good football and no cheating. A credit to both teams.

it does seem that terry runs the show behind the scenes gerrard should of been giving the gung-ho interview not terry, and it looks like he is advising capello on who should start the next game,if that is the case what is capello getting that abhorrent 6 million quid a year for then?

The main difference being that Mr Herbert has players who want to play for him. Mr Herbert even played in England. 49 games for Wolverhampton Wanderers between 1984 and 1986. England two games, two points. New Zealand two games, two points. FA saving... £5,975,000. Just think how much corporate entertaining you could pay for. Someone also tell me how Portugal are ranked 3rd in the World?

"Hello, you are through to the Hindsight Line. Merse speaking, how may I help you?" I feel so ill today I've slept through the whole game and have only just emerged from the bedroom. Have I made some sort of accurate "prediction" then?
