BBC Sport are reporting that Mr Ferdinand has been taken to hospital for a scan after hurting his left knee in a training session.
With Rio suffering injuries all last season is our Squad, sorry Aussie, is the England squad looking a bit light defensivley?

Good old Sky Sports News have confirmed that he is OUT of the World Cup, following an innocuous tackle from Heskey who thought that Rio was after his bale of hay.

Drogba out for the Ivory Coast as well - what price no African teams make it out of the group stage?

Whilst I feel sorry for the player himself missing out on a World Cup Rio Ferdinand at the centre of our defence did not fill me with confidence, and I have a sneaking suspicion he felt the same way although a professional footballer would never admit such. He has not been in good form at all and I would bet our World Cup opponents would have been working on how to force errors from him. So hopefully it will have messed up our opponents training ground routines more than it will affect ourselves. It's always good to remember that no one player makes a team, albeit having said that had it been young Wayne Rooney heading home injured I would have waved goodbye to any outside chance we may have!

Oh come on petef every year we manage to put up with two weeks of Wimbledon, cricket games where one team scores 422 and the other 115 and it's a draw, and that pointless procession of high powered cars every couple of weeks! Surely we can manage four weeks of football as a prelude to our next promotion season ;D

I'm a little bit with you petef on the annoying flags. Last World Cup 2006 I was working in Italy (they won it of course) but they did their car flags differently. It normally consisted of all passenger windows wound down and blokes sitting on the sill and leaning out waving a FULL size flag on the end of a 6-8 metre pole. Sometimes the driver had his right hand on the steering wheel but was also holding a flag out of the car with his left hand. Molto curioso! Enjoyed very much the experience of watching the World Cup unfolding alongside the Italians, who by then knew me quite well, and it is quite likely that as this tournament develops I will be motivated for some more musings about it all. However I'm with petef really. Pales into insignificance compared to our real team who I am convinced will get promoted next season (even though Dave doesn't want us to ... and I can understand that too as in the Football League in recent memory every time we go up we come straight down again) Enjoy every minute of the World Cup as it is just a fleeting moment in the passage of time and is something we can enjoy whilst we are still here. Sombre? A bit

Not bothered in the slightest that Brand Rio ain't gonna be there. In fact quite pleased he's out. The thought of watching his stupid hair playing in and possibly lifting the WC in our name appalled me. Brand Gerrard is now captain but at least he can play a bit.
We're better off without that mistake ridden liability.

Not bothered in the slightest that Brand Rio ain't gonna be there. Nor me, Ferdinand lacks the concentration levels to succeed at the highest levels needed to win World Cups and at those levels he always seems to lose his man at the crucial moment ~ step up to the plate Ledley King..................cometh the hour, cometh the man. John Terry too, is not of the required standard to win World Cups; and maybe Jamie Carragher will turn out to be that man. I know Terry and Ferdinand have been the manager's first choice, but I think they're a million miles form the very best which has to be Lucio; and THAT at the end of the day is the bench mark we will have to match to win the bloody thing! Or could Michael Dawson now be the man to successfully partner King seeing as they know one another's game so well? That would be my preferred option were I the England manager, but I'm not; Fabio is and we put our trust in him!

Rio has'nt looked fit to me for months.Dawson will help the squad Ledley will step up (he's not as fit as he could be but has played for Spurs in the last 10 games).

Well, there's always Torquay United pennant flags suitable for "cars and motor vehicles" (thanks to Timbo's latest programme). 5p each should undercut all the competitors:

Don`t worry about me mate, you refer to England as "us" as I am in your country and in no way would be offended by anyone refering to their own country as "us"! I`m encouraged by your consideration though!
