Well last Saturday our family took over the Blagdon Inn In Painton, for a family party Of 100+ to celebrate Carol's mum and dads 50th wedding anniversary. Today we took it over again, this time 160 in total for the christening party Of Carols grandson Alfie Jay. I was So shocked to see a Torquay United football hero holding the baby. Turns out there Is a link between his family and Carols and Alfie Jay was been a guest at Johns house before. So I was able to have a really great chat with John about football and the club, the second one this year, as I chatted to him in a waiting room at Torbay Hospital earlier In the year. So this Is John Impy today The only question I want to ask Is why Alfie Jay did not tell me he was John Impeys mate ;D

I still hurt from running into that "Big Fecker" on the rugby field when I played for NAGS and he played for Heles School, Exeter over forty years ago...........and I think he is a couple of years younger than me! Him and Peter Darke were the two major stars of the schoolboy scene in the City at the time and BOTH found their way to Plainmoor, Darky via Argyle and Impers via Cardiff and Bournemouth!

The great thing about John Impey Is , he Is a real true gent, always prepared to stop and chat with any fans, I just find I get a neck ache having to look up to the guy.
He was talking about the money he got paid as a player, not much really, I thought he would have been paid much more. Also had a chat about his days as a manager for the club and his views On how he felt things had gone for him.
I said that to be fair to him, he never had the resources that Buckle has to day and I explained that Is why fans maybe expect a lot Of the team this year.
He felt that fans just expected far to much last season, but did feel that things were not right after xmas, with the squad etc.
He started talking about a manager needs to play to the strength Of the players he has got In his squad. Now Merse did a piece, where he asked did the manager set the style he wanted his team to play and the players needed to adapter to It. Or did a manager choose the style that was best suited to the players,
Johns view was that you have to play only to the the players strengths and not the other way around. We talked about playing midfield players as defenders, as they should be better on the ball, they could play the ball far better out Of defense. John being a defender, did not think It made any sense and said you had a split second to make up your mind, what you were going to do with the ball.
Not sure what was around you, then just stick It in row Z, not try and play some pretty midfield type pass out Of defense. If you see the man around and he Is not in a rush to go anywhere, say hello and you will find he Is a great bloke to talk too.

I remember how, when John played for Taunton Town in the autumn of his career, the local paper routinely referred to him as "ex-England schoolboy international John Impey". Quite a surprising label given he was around 36 or 37 at the time. Obviously impressed the locals far more than ex-Cardiff, Exeter, Torquay, Bournemouth, etc.

87/88 Was the first season that I WANTED to go to Plainmoor rather than being dragged along since I was a "debutant" as a 5 year old in 1982. Impey was one of the stand-out players - a fearsome player in a rock-solid team. IIRC, wasn't that the last season he featured regularly as a starter?
Real shame that he took over as Manager when he did in a way (although he can count himself as a Manager that took TUFC to promotion - only one of 2 in my lifetime!). We were never ready for that level of football at that time and Bateson was a "fire at pace, repent at leisure" time of Chairman (as opposed to becoming "hire at pace, repent at leisure" thereafter).
