Watching the news over the weekend, it has been filled with the terrible floods in Cumbria and sadly a policeman lost his life, trying to protect the public. We were only talking last week about the 1979 Newton Abbot town flood and the ones that had happened before.
Your heart goes out to all those who’s houses were flooded and just before Christmas, it’s hard to see your home and processions destroyed, but at least they can be thankful that apart from the policeman, no one else lost their lives.
But of all the flood pictures I have ever seen on TV, none shocked me as much and have stayed in my mind as the day Boscastle was flooded. I heard it on the news during the day and when I saw the pictures of the cars being washed down to the harbour and into the sea, for me the most unbelievable sight.
Carol and I had been there just two weeks before the flood and had parked in the very same car park from where all the cars came from that were carried down the streets into the sea by the flood waters.
It was strange for me not to have my camera with me, as I do like to have make a photo record of our days out together. Our day stated in the morning at Tintagel as we want to once again see King Arthur’s castle. As you may know before you go to the main part of the ruined castle, there are some steps on the left that take you to another part of it. They are so steep and narrow and yours truly got three quarters of the way up and froze, well I just can’t stand heights.
I told Carol to go on up to the top, as she should see what was up there. Watching her look back down on me when she finally got up there, I knew that has she has never let anything defeat her, I just had to get up there with her. I did, but then had to come down, I did that as well, hence I can write this today and post it up on the forum.
So over to Boscastle for the afternoon and I wanted to do the cliff walk as there is an interesting look out post on the headland. I will never forget on our way back down Carol slipped on some small stones on the path and fell really hard onto the only rock sticking up through the grass, her bun was very sore, but we laughed about it all the way back to the harbour.
We had planned to go and see the Witches Museum, but by the time we got back there it had closed. We plan to go back next year to see how it all looks now. Some great pictures taken before and after the flood, do you have any good memories of the day you went to Boscastle?
