Aberfan.
Aged 10 - and in my last year at primary school - I was sick and off school that day and can remember hearing the news come through on the radio. I have this mental picture of sitting on the stairs being very upset that this was happening to kids of my own age.
Years later I recall a middle-aged Taunton supporter taunting Newport supporters with shouts of "Aberfan!" - I've a sneaky feeling this was something he'd learnt at Ashton Gate - and I must say I lost it with him.

Aberfan.....................144 people (116 of them kids aged 7-10 years old) buried alive by the National Coal Board to the utter shame of their Chairman Lord Robens who wouldn't even attend the scene of the disaster until he had finished another engagement. I was in South Wales on a schools' rugby tour at the time (staying in Trethomas).................total shock, trauma and grieving all around. I passed that cemetery a few years ago and couldn't find it in myself to go in.

I told my son this afternoon that the well traveled and well educated Mr Barton Downs would guess the location.
It was pouring with rain and I had a huge lump in my throat.
144 poor souls lost their lives that day. some things are more important than even football

Hi Guys sorry to bring this topic back to the top but thought worthwhile as another tribute to this forum. I like to read all our boards every day (when possible) and this particular thread was very thought provoking and obviously settled in my sub conscious somewhere. We HAD to go and spend a few days in Brother in Laws caravan in Porthcawl. Friday was overcast and the maps were out as to where to go and spend a few hours. I just happened to mention how far is Aberfan and we were all on our way. The weather suited the mood walking around the graves and memorial gardens--allthough I was surprised at the lack of information boards. This was a moment in history that I was too young to appreciate at the time but thanks to you guys it made an interesting visit.
