A disappointing result in an even contest with few clear cut chances for either side. Sponsors MOTM recalled Mark Ellis who put in another excellent performance alongside the equally impressive Charnock in central defence. Crowd 4,028, I guess 700-800 from Brighton.
Before I get onto the match, a quick word about my matchday experience. As a season ticket holder in the Family stand, I knew today I had the queue up and pay to get in. I reached the ground at 2.30pm and I could not believe the huge queues trying to get into the Family stand. It took me ages to find the end of the queue which even went to a nearby street. Then I wondered how long it would take to get in, I did not see the queues move much and I might not get a seat. So I made a decision to stand on my own in the Poip side, something I now regret. There was not much of a queue for the Pop side so I found my place around the half-way line.
I can't say I enjoy standing up for a game anymore, I'm getting a little too old for that. I have never been impressed with the design of the new Pop side, the steps are shallow, there are limited areas you are allowed to stand and I felt all rather squashed. My mood was not helped by some very immature and pretty offensive chanting which do nothing to promote a friendly atmosphere. And then alot of stick was being dished out for one of our own players, Tyrone Thompson. Admittedly he was poor, but give him some encouragement, please.
Now onto the game and Torquay kicked towards the Family stand for the first half. Jake Thompson on the right wing and Carlisle on the left wing had decent games and looked our best threat. It was good to see Hargreaves getting well stuck in the the midfield and we looked solid at the back. Rendell got some useful flick-ons and used his strength well at times, but Benyon was well marshalled by their defence. The best chance of the half from either team was a thumping header by Charnock that their keeper did well to tip over. Torquay played at a good tempo.
The second half was similiar, a game played mainly in midfield with few clear chances. Torquay did play some slick football at times but the final ball was often disappointing and it had to be said Brighton were solid themselves. Brighton edged into the game more and Poke showed good handling when needed, and the ball whistled across our goal on a couple of occasions. Then the the 77th. minute, a Brighton corner was headed in - 1-0. Quite a soft goal really but it was enough to win the match for them.
Torquay made a triple substitution for the last 15 minutes, on came Nicholson, Sills and Stevens for Smith ,Jake Thomson and Benyon. Torquay finally exerted some decent pressure for the last 10 minutes and Nicholson hit a rocket of a free-kick that their keeper well saved.
So 1-0 it ended, but at least I could get out of Pop side at last and it will be a long time again before I will want to stand there again.
