Phew, well that's 3 more points in the bag but we were hanging on desperately at times. Crowd 3,792, 100+ from Hereford, sponsors MOTM Robertson. It was a game played on a heavy pitch, and the game was pretty heavy going to watch much of it pretty scrappy and few clear cut chances. But very good committment from the Gulls who ended up grinding out a win.
A good turn-out by the fans with the Family Stand virtually full, and interesting to see Paul Sturrock sitting alongside Colin Lee. Torquay kicked towards the Family Stand for the first half which is not normally a good omen. It was clear when the match settled down that Torquay were not really gelling. Having Zebroski and Benyon in attack meant there was not an obvious target man to hold the ball up. Likewise our central midfield of Wroe and Thompson were not winning their battle. Our only real outlet were our wingers Thomson and Carlisle. Our left back Smith got booked against their pacy right winger after just 10 minutes and walked a tightrope for the rest of the match. A little against the run of play Torquay took the lead. Thomson went on his many great mazy runs, beat 2 defenders in the box and then got tripped. Wroe dispatched the penalty although the keeper did get a hand to the ball.
Hereford to their credit did try to take the game to Torquay and at times Torquay looked more like the away team. Luckily for all Hereford's approach play they did not carve out hardly any clear-cut chances. Torquay's play was sporadic, at times they played some good neat football but there was not much of an end product. You felt it was not a game or pitch suited for Benyon and as stated earlier the ball was not sticking up front. So 1-0 at half-time and we were quite fortunate to be winning.
The second half was more of the same really and the game was a little boring at times. However time was ticking on and still The Gulls led. Hereford did carve out a decent opening and from an angle but at close range Poke reacted brilliantly with his feet to deflect the goal bound shot away for a corner. Hereford used all their substitutions and at last Rendell replaced Benyon. Shortly after Torquay had their best spell and we finally had a targetman. Torquay carved out a few decent chances in just a few minutes and finally the home crowd had something to get excited about. Rendell was through and got brought down but no penalty was given and the ball hovered on a few occasions in dangerous areas but just lacked a finishing touch. However with 4 minutes injury time Hereford pushed forward and should have equalised. They fired one clear chance just over, had a "goal" ruled out for offside and Torquay somehow survived.
So another valuable win and we are now moving nicely away from the relegation battle. I was impressed with today's commitment especially Mansell who did plenty of geeing up when we were struggling. Robertson and Charnock had solid games in central defence. As mentioned previously Thomson and Carlisle were our main creators and I thought Rendell gave the team the necessary balance when he came on. Zebroski was pretty quiet and Benyon was his normal lively self but little came off for him.
