Many thanks for this programme.
Alan Smith was my all time favourite player. Undoubtidly one of the most versitile of defenders we ever had on our books.
A hard player who took no prisoners, but not one of your typical dirty players of the Sixties.
I studied A level Geography with him at night school at the Technical College in the late Sixties after his career was tragically cut short by injury.
He was a genuine nice guy, very friendly.
I bumped into him once in Ellacombe in about 1970 and unfortunately never seen him since.
This is one of my personal favourite programmes in my collection.

This is what it says on the TUFC History site:
20/03/71 All Star XI 2 Wolves 3 5,438 Alan Smith Testimonial
Lester bloody Shapter in the middle - as per usual - for this type of occasion.
A piece by Keith Perry of the Herald Express when, I guess, he was still the paper's TUFC reporter (with Gordon Hines on the scene as well). I assume Merse headed off to the Shiphay Manor afterwards (gear from John Conway?). Obviously easier than nipping up to the Manor House in Southampton where Eric Webber was mine host.
I still love the idea of us signing a player from Port Sunlight (another chapter in the Torquay United soap opera) which suggests Alan Smith must have enjoyed scoring his very first goal against Tranmere Rovers.
The Seventies Boutique in the (undoubtedly) fabulous new Crossways shopping centre in Paignton!!! (says it all doesn't it? I remember my mum thinking that Crossways was fantastic - did it have a Gateway supermarket?).

Quite right - but should say 30/3/71 I didn't want to find fault with such a fine website! What's its' history? I see also that this site is being called the Torquay Funny Farm in certain quarters. I can live with that....they may have a point!
