Interesting reference to the "Hanley Sentinel" newspaper - now just the "The Sentinel." A pretty distinctive title like the Hexham Courant and the Southport Visiter (as opposed to "Visitor"). There must be many other quirky old titles... Maybe use of "Stoke-on-Trent" to refer to the Six Towns wasn't universally accepted back then? City status had only been granted in 1925 - I wonder how Vale reacted to Stoke FC immediately adding "City" to its title?
Indeed, Port Vale played in Hanley in those days and our away fixture would have been played at the Old Recreation Ground rather than Vale Park which wasn't to open until 1950.

Timbo, I think this needs moved to the previous season, as you have it dated in the heading as September 1949, whereas it was March 1949. Regards, Steve.
