If anyone ever reads my posts (well I know at least one person does) you would have read my post I made called “Time For Me To Accept”. Written after my team suffered a defeat at the hands of a team that a few years ago, I would have laughed at the thought such a team could ever beat my TUAFC.
So today I have asked myself just why Torquay United becoming a league team again, is so very important to me and I guess every other fan. I came up with three reasons that were top of my list, there were many more, but to me these were the most important to me.
Reason 1. I really just find it hard these days to get excited about any game my team plays, it’s not the fault of the team, but the opposition we now find our team playing against. How can the likes of Histon, Salisbury, or even Weymouth ever get me into a state, that the matchday just can’t come soon enough, get me in the frame of mind, that nothing would stop me being at the match.
OK, fans my age were spoilt once, we had great days out, playing some big teams, singing our TUAFC songs as we walked into White Hart Lane, Hillsborough, watching out team play on the beech at Coventry (they had more sand on it than we have on Paignton beech). Also a day to remember when we played Burnley just had to keep any eye over your shoulder.
I know some fans who went to away games last season, enjoyed their first visits to some non-league grounds, but who did not think, they would ever need to go there again, but we know what happened to the end of our last season and here we are once again playing another season in the BSP So that is reason one, I struggle to find the will to watch the teams we are now playing.
Reason two. I do not want to start another Sentanta debate, we have had enough of them and some got out of hand, as we well know, but playing in this league, has meant losing many Saturday games, due to TV etc. I’m sure that I’m not alone today; missing football today and I know I have had no interest in any other games that have taken place today. For me a Saturday without my team playing, Is just not a Saturday.
You work all week and those that have the weekend off, need their fix of football on a Saturday, It’s the day the game was and always should be played on, like I said It’s the TV that has forced all the changes, with no thought, of tradition, or what the true fans want. Today for me has ended up a bit of a bore, I have worked on the forum, to keep myself busy, but I still feel there is something missing today.
Reason three. It’s the cost really, I know our club has got to make ends meet, I know If it stands any chance of going back up, It needs to get the best players, its budget can afford. At £15 watching the quality of football on offer, Is not only not good value for a fans money, In terms of entertainment value, It is even worse, when you think how much better entertainment you could get for the money. Go with Bev to a race meeting, much cheaper, up to eleven races and a meeting could last four hours.
The worst thing that could happen, Is your favorite driver did not win, but despite that, trust me you would come away, knowing you had a great and fun afternoon. Can we say the same at a football match, we could walk away after a game on cloud nine, but then again, angry, upset and swearing to ourselves we will never go again. So reason three, Is simply all about value for money, I like others had it when we were playing as a league club, but for me anyway the sense of value for my money has gone.
So I hope all fans can play their part and the club do theirs, to get our club back into the football league, as I truly feel that staying to long in the BSP, will just prove old uncle Mile correct and we can’t be having that can we.
