That must be a very early edition of the Football League Review in that Shrewsbury programme. At the time us little 'uns thought it to be a great innovation adding a touch of freshness to dull old club programmes. It must have been part of an effort by the Football League to "move with the times" in the wake of the World Cup and new magazines setting up. In retrospect it was a rather strange and quite old-fashioned publication that, whilst attempting to be "modern", actually reflected a view of a football world that was slowly withering away. Quirky, non-controversial and quite sweet in its own way I welcomed it at first but, at some stage in the future, removed copies from all of my progammes from that era as part of a "purification" process. Note - in this issue - the article about swearing and the wonderful photo of Mrs Harold Shentell, wife of the Chesterfield chairman. And, yes, Gordon Banks and World Cup Willie..... And there's always something on the web, isn't there? www.soccerbilia.co.uk/acatalog/About_Soccer_Review__Football_League_Review.html As to the programme itself, two names: Shrewsbury manager Arthur Rowley, scorer of the record number of goals in league football - www.guardian.co.uk/news/2002/dec/21/guardianobituaries.football - and defender/striker Alf Wood (later at Millwall, Hull and elesewhere).

I reckon with a hat like that she could well have been Nora Batty's mother. Somehow I couldn't envisage her "many friends gained" in exchange for the loss of her husband's company having many horny young Spireites amongst them!
