This is a great programme on a number of fronts, firstly as being for a match in the Western Counties Floodlight League in which we competed in this one season (before resuming for a short while in the seventies) and played on the Wednesday evening of November 3rd, 1965 ending in a 0-0 draw.
The picture on the front shows the Poole Stadium that the club played at from 1933 until 'removed' by the local council in 1994, but which is still visible when driving along the waterfront on the way to Southampton.
But the really interesting aspect of this programme can be gleaned from the manager's notes, for which no name is attached, but who Jon now corrects me was Eric Webber after being jettisoned by United in favour of Frank O'Farrell. And at number 10 is Ernie Pym, fresh from over 300 games for United and taking up a striking role for Poole. What makes it even more interesting is he is in opposition to his old club for the first time and playing against players he knew so closely.
This ties in really well with the programme I posted previously when he is seen in the line-up for the South Devon league XI against Torquay United in 1955. So we have 'bookend' programmes to his career at United with two games in which he appears against them either side of his playing for us.
Of further interest is the Poole Town number 9, Cliff Balsom, who played four games for Torquay before being transferred to Swindon the season before this game. He is mentioned in the Hele Spurs thread as coming through the ranks of the fifties ‘A’ team to play in the first team. He didn’t make the grade in his one season at Swindon, and never actually played in the first team. The Swindon Town records suggest he was transferred back to us at the beginning of the 1965/66 season, but if that is the case then he was immediately dispatched to Poole.
Most of the Torquay team were made up of players who were fairly regular first teamers along with a number of fringe players, and included Geoff Cox and Robin Stubbs.
