What can be said of this magic day thats not been repeated before, I was a young twenty year old squashed into the rear of the "cow shed" roaring myself horse with the second half heroics of "our Robin". It was truly a match of a life time for many of us every game supporters surrounded by the twenty thousand, you could not have scripted a better game. Watching the like of Greaves and Gilzean on our hallowed turf and to think if there was the modern day extra time added we just may have won this historic battle.

Still after all these years the most fantastic, most memorable and most wonderful day to look back on and say "I Was There!" Being just thirteen years old I suppose made the day that much more awe inspiring than if one had been an adult. To me it never occurred that maybe the likes of Jimmy Greaves and Alan Gilzean had their eye off the ball somewhat and perhaps their pre-match approach might have left a bit to be desires. I got the opportunity to chat to Greavsie about it during the afternoon of the Jimmy Dunne Testimonial match at Plainmoor in the eighties and although he confessed that indeed they held a somewhat condescending attitude towards our little club and it's ramshackle ground they were certainly in the mood for the replay having been only too relieved to hear the final whistle at Plainmoor when they realised they had allowed OUR lads back into the match and indeed take over the pace and direction of the game. Somehow, I don't think they were looking forward to the confrontation with Bill Nicholson in the dressing room at the end and certainly not the ensuing training sessions between then and the replay! N.B. By the way Dave, the programme price was no big deal it was twice the size and twice as good as the run of the mill issue for that season and well worth the double the normal cost ~ the usual ones were sixpence (2.5p) in those days! ;D

Gotta love those adverts, you have to wonder what exactly "More Hops in Ben Truman" actually meant. Somehow I think life must have been simpler back then....

..............................and to think if there was the modern day extra time added we just may have won this historic battle. ............................ and if there had been, Spurs might well have missed their five thirty train back to London..........................the reason for the apparantly obscure 2.45 pm kick off time (check the programme cover if you doubt me) further evidence of just where the game might have ben featuring in the scheme of things for the North London giants!

I do not think the Herald Express Bygones appear on the on line version, well this weeks bygones has some great pictures of the South Devon land army girls and a great piece that fits in very nicely on this thread. Anyone know who the fan is?

Jimmy Cricket minus his wellies I think! I went to the Doctors, and theres more come 'ere! ;D
No, seriously Sorry, about that. He is obviously a very dedicated fan with the crutches not stopping his getting to the game! These days you'd need crutches after a game between Arsenal and Tottenham. At least there wasn't the risk of too much crowd trouble and after match fighting in the 60's especially in Torquay!

As Merse says its a day never to be forgotten, as a teenager crushed into the "cowshed" and cheering myself horse along with the throng that famous day, my only disapointment that day was "our Robin" scores his goals at the Ellecombe end and I'm shortsighted. Im still happy to have seen that match and all the top class players humbled by "our mighty team", oh that they could have played extra time, would have saved the famous fog posponed game trip to White heart Lane.

Not sure if there's already been a TUFC v Spurs League Cup 1971 thread so i'll pop this on here for now. The reason being that in that programme there were a couple of pictures from the '65 cup game which may be of interest... (Incidentally, the League Cup game was lost 4-1 with Bruce Stuckey getting our goal in front of over 20,000 at Plainmoor.)
