Well, we didn’t reach the Fourth Round of the FA Cup for the seventh time…. But all the same I’m going to pop on here a programme from the first time we did get that far. This first time was actually achieved in the 1948/49 season where we were eventually beaten 1-0 by Second Division Brentford on the 29th of January, in front of 24,500 spectators, having beaten Peterborough, Norwich and Coventry on the route there. The only change to the line-up shown being Charlie Hill played at number 10 in place of Jack Conley. Brentford went out to Leicester in the 6th round, losing 2-0 at home. Note the warning to mis-behaving fans!

Another little gem, Budleigh (and I was there this afternoon after walking the coast path from Exmouth). The cover has the feel of those old News Chronicle Football Annuals.
January 1949 wouldn't have been too long after my parents decamped from W5 to Babbacombe - I wonder if any furniture from Wheatland's of the Broadway made the journey as well? However, I suspect Whiteman Sports (established 1948) on South Ealing Road came just too late for my mother's tennis gear requirements. Apparently she played a few games with Fred Perry - he was from Ealing after all - although I've often feared if it might have been a Fred Perry impersonator chatting up impressionable school girls.
The bit about misbehaving fans - no throwing orange peels, now! - reminds me of my dad telling me about a game at Griffin Park back then when he saw an elderly woman hit a linesman with an umbrella.
Finally, are those thirty-four male Argyle fans still looking for somewhere to stay? Any offers from those who live around there?
