Following on from the Kingsteignton Youth v Torre Trojans programme that Tim posted on here, this Torbay Herald Cup Final between the 'big boys' of Kingsteignton Athletic and Upton Athletic was played a few days later, on May 3rd 1971, also at Plainmoor. The Torbay Herald Cup Final was normally played at the Recreation Ground, Newton Abbot so this was a change from the norm. This is also obviously the reason for the 'proper' programme as opposed to the former single sheet, or folded, affairs. The following season's game was played at Homers Lane, Kingsteignton so did they ever go back to Plainmoor (or was this a one-off) or did the final stay at Homers Lane or revert to the Recreation Ground? I'm assuming the move from the Recreation Ground was to do with the disbanding of Newton Abbot Spurs that season and therefore the ground being now unfit for a final of this calibre? This match was won 4-0 by Kingsteignton for a record sixth time whilst it was Upton Athletic's first final appearance. Upton then went on, over the next decade, to dominate this cup and eventually overhauled Kingsteignton's record. Good to see that Tony Boyce was invited along to make the presentation accompanied by his wife Sheila. But my biggest memory is stirred not by football but by a phone number in an advert. Teignmouth 2501, being that of County Garage in Bitton Park Road and a number I would dial an awful lot some ten or so years later as I started dating a young girl who worked there (in fact she was the owner's daughter!)

This was the year that the old "Rec" and the adjacent South Devon Cricket Ground were de-commissioned whilst the football pitch was re-aligned at ninety degrees to it's original layout and a dull, all purpose "Sports Centre" constructed. In other words, the end of the "Good Old Days" of NA having a proper town centre football ground Almost forty years on and still no stands, no floodlights and no ambition!

When was the last time you were in town Mr Merson? Not sure about the clubs ambitions but the ground currently has 2 small stands, floodlights installed and an excellent playing surface that would put many western league grounds to shame.

Coach Road has a decent stand & floodlights Merse. Also Newton Spurs have just erected floodlights, part of the conditions of playing in the Peninsula League

I must admit I haven't looked in at the Rec for a couple of years come to think of it. So after four decades some progress eh? Wonders will never cease..................I only hope the description "stand" doesn't in anyway include that "bike shed" behind one goal. Coach Road and Homers Heath are two great little grounds of character and just what a town of NA's population should have at least a couple of, but it should still have a main town ground befitting a town of that size and to my mind bearing in mind what they once had; the Rec just doesn't cut the mustard.

The other stand makes the "Bike shed" as you call it look like the Holte end at Villa Park.

Is the Mike Beer in the Kingsteignton team the Newton Abbot lawyer who used to be a director of TUFC and is an influential figure in the South Devon League?
Is Malcolm Wildman related to Martin - who is currently on the Board of TUST?
