I must say this was a team I loved watching and I have always wondered why one player from this team who I really enjoyed watching has never been mentioned on here as far as I know.
Mr Jackie Gallagher, a player who had plenty of skill and tricks, but maybe did lack pace, what a hair style he had and my all time favourite Steve Cooper was also in the team. But there are so many others who were a joy to watch, Collin Anderson, what a left back he was, he would bomb down the wing and always put in good crosses.
Mr Rioch himself in the team and who can forget the shouts that went up when we won a free kick when he was on the pitch.
Did Barton Downs ever confirm when what we call the popside started to be called that? A picture in the home programme still refers to that stand as the Popular Side.
I wonder how many junior members he had back then and who can remember watching any of their 6 a side competition games? Just one more question, do we have any member on here that is listed as playing for the D or the H team?

Reading the home programme I cannot believe it is 28 years since the passing of Dorcas Jewers. Cancer claimed her after a somewhat painful and debilitating illness that was distressing to witness and learn of weekly degeneration of her health and thus comfort and the effect it had on her and John's two young children, Alistair and Sarah. So I've spent a brief little period of reflection on the life of my former work colleague and good friend feeling somewhat melancholy. Reading the name Dave Linney in the Oxford United line up has restored a smile to my face in a strangely ironic way for the last time I met and spoke to Dorcas' husband John was during a visit to Yeovil Town during their last season as a non league club (he was approaching 65 himself then and thus retirement) and it was on New Years' Day as well! John's boss at Huish was none other than Dave, who I remembered as a long time employee of the club and former player with Weymouth and Yeovil; but until today I didn't know he also played for Birmingham City and Oxford United. A lovely, if poignant memory jogger at the dawning of a new decade. I see too, in the list of Plainmoor Vice Presidents; the name of Brian Ford who we mentioned on here as a former Argyle director and proprieter of Ford & Lock's; the father of Richard Ford the local football goalkeeper of some note. On the subject of the match at Oxford, does Dazgull remember how I "covered" for him at work when he had been denied time off to travel to that cup tie? I won't mention the firm, but it caused me a little bit of bother with my immediate boss there at the time; but I empathised with Darren's intense desire to be thee and as I was only reffing a South Devon League match that day I could spare the Saturday morning at work ;D

Did Barton Downs ever confirm when what we call the popside started to be called that? A picture in the home programme still refers to that stand as the Popular Side. From memory I think I posed the question as to when it started to be known as the Popular Side as opposed to the Marnham Road stand or terrace. The abbreviation to the Pop Side seems to have been relatively recent but I must confess it's not something I really like. I much prefer the Popular Side although I see my season ticket book refers to the Popular Terrace (and not even a Carlsberg one at that). 4-3-3 team line-ups in the home programme against Oxford I see (with actual shirt numbers?). And, on the subject of Oxford, I've just been reading about the introduction of speed humps in part of that city in a marvellously quirky book called On Roads by Joe Moran. Apparently, whilst Oxford has long been known as the City of the Dreaming Spires, Blackbird Leys was once called the City of the Screaming Tyres.....

Is it the same family Barton? the Brian Ford supermarket is an old building and you can see why tescos would like the site as its just over the bridge from the square. Their current supermarket is on the way out of Barnstaple Tiverton bound.

I would reckon it is now run by a member or members of the next generation (possibly Richard?), although Brian Ford would'nt be that old ~ certainly less than eighty if he were still alive.....................as you can see from the Torquay v Oxford programme his home was at Brimley near Bovey Tracey.

Brian Fords in Barnstaple was at one time the King of the discounters and was probably the busiest supermarket in Devon........their loss leaders were second to none, i can remember sending them 20,000 Oranges every day for a week on a promotion and cleared the lot, they sold 'em for 2p each (a lot less than they paid for them )........nowadays its just the german discounters (Lidl and Aldi) that offer any kind of value as our countries supermarkets just get greedier and greedier. Good days they were.......then the supermarkets took over in a blink of an eye and control and manipulate the food chain in this country for their benfit and sadly, not ours. (Don't get me started on this one!)
