I intended to post some Bournemouth programmes last week, but just didn`t have the time. But here is one for a game played on News Year Day. Result 1-2 (Cooper,Ferns(og) ). Attendance: 5185. A good start to 1980 for us in a season which we looked good for promotion at this stage, but only managed to win two more games. I was at the game, but do not remember anything about it. The only thing I do remember is seeing one of Bournemouth's most famous supporters,England Mascot Ken Bailey who was always dressed up in his outfit and had his Union Jack. I have included a couple of pictures of him from Twickenham in 1982 when he covered streaker Erica Roe with his Union Jack. Sadly he died in1993 aged 82. Here he is homing in on her. The BIG cover up!!!! Oh,bye the way, here`s the programme. A few familiar faces here.

I took a short cut through Wimborne Road cemetery in Bournemouth on the way to the match last Tuesday and noticed Ken Baily’s gravestone in a prominent place. It has a Union Jack emblem – no footballing flag of St George in Ken’s day (he died before Euro ’96) – and the words “England’s Cheerleader”. Always something of an enigma (to say the least) and, from being on the Palk Arms quiz team with a Bournemouth supporter in the late 1970s, I quickly discovered Ken wasn’t everybody’s cup of tea. All sorts of stuff about him on the web and these amusing words from Peter Seddon’s Pickles the World Cup Dog and Other Unusual Football Obituaries:

Merse, TQ12 Newton Abbot ? - London N7 ? Yes we are a postcode or two apart but its not about prompting a radical response. When you do return, focus on the football side of things; PLEASE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

A very entertaining read, I was aware that Ken was a bit of an unusual character but to an even greater extent than I had realised.
'A football icon the like of which we will never see again' is probably an accurate comment & he always provided a colourful presence at international matches....as well I now learn in Bournemouth on the occasions he cycled around dressed as Haile Selassie.
Whatever his failings a man who appreciates trifle has at least one redeeming feature in my eyes.
