A programme from our reserve Western League game away at The Huish against Yeovil Town on the 17th of October, 1959 which we won 2-0 on our way to winning the title. It’s always interesting to read the ‘player’s notes’ in these away fixture reserve games as they often give us a bit of biographical detail about ‘lesser’ players, especially those who never made the first team. Palmer, a promising young full-back who joined from Cardiff and was a Welsh Schoolboy International. What happened to him? And there's a Bristow... which one was he? Then on the Yeovil team, a familiar name to students of United’s history, a certain Dave Topping who, of course, made nearly 160 appearances for us before moving up to Yeovil and being a stalwart of their team for so many years. (He also featured in the Whites v Reds 1950 practice game, the programme for which I posted on here.) The ‘Our Visitors’ notes are also interesting in the mention of United manger Eric Webber being ‘axed’ the previous season after an indifferent set of results (before being reinstated with a three year contract). So even then well-respected managers had a rocky time and found themselves in trouble. It’s not just a new thing around Plainmoor! Not only that but at the end of the following season, the one for which this programme is for, Webber's first team won promotion whilst this reserve team won the Western League and cup ‘double’.

the BRISTOW you mention in that yeovil game Budleigh is ROY BRISTOW,who was around 16 years old at that time. hailed from the barton area of torquay and was a star turn for audley park school. really dont know what became of him, certainly never played for the first team. The team that appeared that day v yeovil was very strong. Even the great Don Mills was plAYING.another interesting player was tommy anderson, a scot who was arguably the fastest player who ever appeared in a torquay shirt.
he regulary took part in the powderhall sprint, a proffessional race that took part in Scotland. I believe he may have won it at least once.
