Result: 2-1 (Lucas,Rudge(p) ). Attendance: 12807. This was the second season in a row that we were the top team in Devon. Also did the double over them and amazingly the next season as well, but we were relegated. I remember this game well. Very cold and snowing for parts of it. It was nice to be the top team in Devon for the second season in a row although the previous season Argyle had got the double over us with that absolute Boxing Day thrashing 6-0 at Home Park, with former milkman Mike Bickle scoring four and Norman Piper getting the other two. Not sure about the historical accuracy of getting the double again the next season when we got relegated. That season we beat them at Plainmoor, 2-1 again I think, towards the end of the season when we were struggling for points to avoid relegation, but I think earlier in the season we had lost another Boxing Day fixture at Home Park 3-1. My memory isn't what it was so I am sure timbo or jon will be able to correct me if I am wrong. My favourite Boxing Day memories, probably because I was young at the time, were the morning kick offs in 1964 and 1965, with Aldershot being our opponents both years. 5-2 win in 1964 with Robin Stubbs scoring four and then a 5-1 win in 1965. The cold meat and pickles certainly tasted better after that! ;D

You are correct,my mistake.

I remember this as an extraordinary game. Morning kick-off with snow all over the pitch. Bitterly cold.
A corner from the Marnham Road side at the Babbacombe End, fisted out by Furnell, but only to Micky Cave (my favourite player). He blasted a volley towards the top corner from the edge of the area and it would have been a goal except that Stephen Davey leaped to punch it around the post. The force of the shot drove the cold, hard orange ball through his hands into his face though, knocking him out! Furnell saved the penalty from John Rudge but only knocked it back to him and he scored from the rebound. Must have been the most protracted goal ever scored at Plainmoor!
It was reported afterwards that 11 spectators were treated for exposure and one old man died. Was that true?

Steve Davey is the father of Gulls physio Damien Davey and it was in the Plainmoor treatment room that the old man died. My then girlfriend was one of the exposure victims (and no, she hadn't got 'em out for the lads) and the home team dressing room had been commandeered in the first half as an emergency medical station. Then everybody was taken through to the away dressing room when the old guy was brought in and laid out on the treatment table. Argyle actually had to wait to get their dressing room back as the half time whistle went and the sufferers were then taken to the old Golden Blue Club as it was then below the stand.

I didn't realise Dick Edwards was a youth international. Long shot but can anyone direct me to his stats for that?
