Note: Ex United player and coach John Rudge Don't forget Clint Boulton ~ a legend at BOTH clubs.......................... "Bernie" signed for Vale straight from school, they are his local club although he is now a long time resident in Torbay. Vale and The Gulls were his only two professional clubs and he was a major signing for us at the time of his move. Hard as granite on the field, quietly spoken and gentle off it. One of those superb characters who it's a privilege to know and a bloody fine footballer in his time! Les Lawrence also played with distinction for both clubs. Anyone who is contemplating going to Vale Park for the first time on Tuesday will find it is a fabulous arena...................wide and expansive; what a shame they never get the crowds to fill it to give it a great atmosphere. I have always found the staff there to be exceptionally efficient and professional but watch yourself in the streets outside as they have some nutters in that neighbourhood and amongst their support. The last time I was there Bijou came with me as we were "weekending" in Manchester; Olivia was a babe in arms and Anthony only three. Unbelievably, on such a bitter afternoon; a female steward was assigned to look after us and she took Oli's bottle from Bijou and heated it up and also came back with a beautiful thermal shawl that had already been warmed also to put as one more layer on the several that already enclosed her! Then from the sublime to the ridiculous as we were surrounded by a mob of neanderthals as we went to our car in the car park after the match, threatening all sorts of retribution on us and the kids.....................unbelievable and sickening. Needless to say, the local police and stewards dispersed them and stayed around to keep an eye on us as we drove away out onto the motorway.

That team line up of the squad in the tracksuits was an interesting occasion........................... I needed a squad group for a pre-season photo earlier in the summer than was normal to take one. This was to accomodate a combined Club Media Guide and double header programme we were producing for a couple of pre-season friendlies with Dundee and Watford and to distribute for the season ahead. Mike Green was unhappy for such a picture to be taken so soon after the players had reported back from their summer break as some of them were carrying a little bit of "extra weight" and he didn't want it to be seen by opposition managers in their match programmes every time we went away that season! Something had to be done as I needed that picture and the manager wasn't budging until Madge Cox (wife of Geoff, mother of Maurice and my assistant) hit on the idea of posing in those trackies which were also going to receive a good plug as we were selling them in the club shop that season. Result: One relieved Business Manager, one happy Team Manager; and a very smart line up. Thank heavens for female lateral thinking!
