This was a momentous day for me...............my very first week on the payroll at Plainmoor, and Malcolm's very last game as manager! The players let the manager down so badly that day which was I believe the club's first ever home defeat to a non league side, and he paid for that and a good few other "non performances" from them leading up to that debacle; with his job. I remember the Chairman addressing the whole club on the Monday morning and grimly spelling out the consequences of that defeat. I remember too, how bitterly upset Malcolm's wife Jean was that afternoon as I think she realised the implications of losing to Barry Fry's collection of has beens and wannabees, the best of whom was Dave Metchick ~ a fine footballer who had played for Arsenal, Fulham and Leyton Orient. Funny how the world changes, for now Hillingdon Borough no longer have that "fine stadium" (it never was that good!) they talked about in the match programme, but instead they play out next door to the Crematorium near Ruislip that we gathered at for the funeral of my very good friend John Adams a few years ago; and I have a friend who is the Director of Football of the current club.

And Hillingdon Borough didn't even exist for a few years. The club of those days - once known as Yiewsley - had really been at its peak (rather like Torquay United) in the late 1960s. After beating us in the FA Cup, Hillingdon Borough slipped from the Southern League's premier division and dropped the "Borough" in 1984 before merging with Burnham. The present club appears to have come on the scene in 1990 and has always been based in the Ruislip part of the borough, sereral miles from the original club.

I find the adverts were interesting in this programme, as so many are well known to me, but many no longer exist.
The first one to jump out at me is the 400 club, I think many of us would have gone to that club looking to find a young lady. The last time I went there was just after Steve Davis won the world snooker title for the very first time.
At that time I was working for a Brummy boss who I did not like, I had a bet with him that Steve would win the world title that year as I had watched him on the TV program called Pot Black. He did and with part of the winnings I bought an LP by Pill Collins Face Values and took it with me to try and get Steve to sign it, he did and told me he had just bought the tape to play in his car and had it on as he drove down here.
Who remembers walking past Jenkins Marble Works, or eating in the Eros restaurant?
