I expect Colin Lee would be interested to see Keith Burkinshaw's name amongst our goalscorers!

Interesting to see Lisburne Electric Co. advertising in this one. For the last ten years or so the half time results at Plainmoor has been accompanied by the announcement "Sponsored by Power Parts and Lisburne Electrics".
(I notice this because my nephew works for Power Parts)

This game took place in the pre-floodlight days and sticks in my mind through the fact that a group of us sat anxiously in a classroom at the grammar school waiting to be released so that we could rush up and catch the second half at least.
I had always thought that the game had kicked off at 3pm, not 2 o'clock, but I must have been wrong about that and perhaps we were allowed out earlier than seemed the case at the time.
Looking at the League table and the teams' respective home and away records, you would have thought that this replay would be fairly straightforward for Torquay, especially as they had done so well in forcing a draw in the first tie.
Gillingham, however, defended really well if the second half (which was all I saw) was anything to judge by, and when Jack Hannaway scored their second shortly after the break, the game was virtually over. Apparently Pat Terry's goal in the first half was something to wonder at, and John Simpson, Gillingham's record appearance holder, had an almost faultless game.
There was a definite sense of deep disappointment all around the ground at the end of the match, however results in the League kept going our way and the season ended with our first ever promotion in the Football League.
