Hi Tim thanks for you contributions to the forum, how do you know it was on Bartons birthday? did you look on the forum birthday board?
I will let you into a little secret, this game was not just on his birthday, it was on the day he was born, so he was not able to go himself.

Timbo,
Many thanks for the 3 December 1955 Coventry programme - much appreciated! When we were in Lge 1 in 2004/05 - and Coventry were struggling in the Championship - I speculated about the prospect of the two clubs meeting on my 50th birthday. As it happened, the day was celebrated with the FA Cup win over Notts County. But - for any Torquay fan born on 7 Jan 1956 (five weeks after me) - both the day of your birth and your 50th birthday would have seen Torquay v Birmingham in the FA Cup at Plainmoor.
Again there's so much in these old programmes. I'm greatly intrigued by the cafeteria car excursion to Shrewsbury - via the Severn Tunnel no doubt - and the forthcoming whist drive at the Co-operative Hall in Union Street. I know the Co-op was always strong in mining and industrial areas but I've sometimes wondered why it was also such a big thing in South Devon (not forgetting, of course, Torquay's contribution to the Co-op's wine operation to this day).
Interesting notes about the floodlit friendly against Middlesbrough - especially the inclusion of Alan Bastow in the team - and the reference to "floodlit enthusiasts". Griff Norman was one of several players who came from Cardiff around then and Jesse Carver, the Coventry manager, also coached the Dutch national team, Juventus, Lazio, Torino, Inter, Roma and Genoa!
Lastly, the advert for the supporters club - going strong since 1921 - is worth a second glance for the mention of its recent achievements including covering the "Marnham Road Side". I knew somebody at school who championed the use of this name. How historic is the use of the term "Popular Side" I wonder?

That will have to be the next challenge Barton, when did the Marnham Road Side, change its name to the popside and who named it the popside, we have all the history men on here and I look forward to reading the answer.

Timbo and Barton, these threads are full of so much information, i love all this local history on the club and the Torquay.
Wonder if anyone can satisfy my curiosity about the Torquay United Supporters Club, who started it?, the history?, role in the clubs future etc. Would be greatly appreciated.
I never imagined that a supporters club would have played such a part in the club all those years ago! Nothing changes I guess!

This thread is one of many that Barton and I felt should be in the new history room, Barton asked that the thread be renamed as it was called Barton's Birthday due to the fact the game was played on the day he was born, so he did not get to go and watch it
