This is one of two programmes I’m popping on here at the same time as they were played within five weeks of each other at the beginning of the 1950/51 season and work well when cross-referenced. The other is a reserve team fixture at home to Weymouth on Wednesday the 20th of September. This here is the programme for the ‘Second Practice Match’, (presumably there had been a first) between the Torquay United Whites & Reds played on Saturday the 12th of August 1950, one week before the start of the season. The Reds team was to become basically the Reserves, as seen in the aforementioned Weymouth programme posted earlier, whilst the White team was made up of some of the ‘big hitters’. Excepting in the Reds team Tommy Northcott was to go off to Cardiff City a year or so later, only to return in 1957 and become a club legend and George Webber was to become a major part of the Gulls defence. Other players in that Reds team had runs in the first team but in the main they started as this seasons reserves. And excepting in the Whites team goalie N. Brinsford, who I can’t find any record of as playing in the first team, and Hearn who doesn’t appear in any player lists, except he started the season as a reserve player joining the nine Reds from this game and could possibly be the B. Hearne (with an ‘e’) who later played for the ‘A’ team and had a place in the 1958 Torbay Herald Cup Final team that beat Beesands Rovers on the 4th of April 1958. And the Southern league game against Exeter City reserves shown as being played ‘Saturday next’? We won 3-1.

I See Mike Tiddy died on Wednesday aged 80 years. With regard to the Hearn on the programme I wasnt Brian Hearne I played cricket with him at Barton in the late 50s he was at Newton Grammar not long before me. I was there 53-57. He was killed in a scooter accident near Torre station in 1959 and he was in his early 20s
