Just look at all the places you could buy tickets for the cup match against Coventry, I know we have the phone sales these days, but if not you have to go to the ground. It was much easier in 1948 to get tickets it seems. Also great to see prices for a cup game in 1948, I have always wondered just how much football was to watch at Plainmoor back then. Maybe one of our clever boys can tell us based on wages back then etc, how these prices compare to todays. Ground just 1s 6d and only 9d for boys, so do I take it girls did not go back in those days

Two things stand out for me from this programme - and they're both about historically-important players at very early stages of their careers. Firstly, the piece about Dennis Lewis who still holds the record for the most League appearances for Torquay United. Secondly, the announcement of the signing of the then-17-year-old Tommy Northcott who proved to be one of the club's greatest talents. And it looks like we fought off some pretty glamorous suitors to sign the teenager.
Another item to fascinate is the growing excitement over the upcoming FA Cup tie against Coventry City which would have been our biggest cup occasion to date (it was to attract a crowd of 12,000 according to the record books).
The Bournemouth game on that 27 December ended in a 1-1 draw (our goal coming from Sammy Collins at a similarly-early stage of his record-breaking career) and followed in the wake of a 5-0 defeat at Dean Court on Christmas Day itself. And, such is the occasional neatness of history, but who are we playing on 28 December 2009? Yep the self-same Bournemouth & Boscombe Athletic, now rechristened AFC Bournemouth.
And, lastly, what a splendid advert for the Babbacombe Garage. Fish and chips at Shaw's anyone?

And there's even Blair v Cameron in the respective team line ups As for the section headed 'Women's Supporters' what a coup in managing to get The Squadronaires for the New Years Eve Ball, no wonder there was a big demand for tickets ! en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_SquadronairesWith a cup tie against Coventry City in mind our more recent match against them was proceeded by the earlier round victory over Blackpool so what else should we hear The Squadronaire's play other than a rendition of 'Tangerine'

Great spot Alpine, but I would not have gone to the ball I'm afraid, nothing to do with having nothing to wear I just hate jazz It's a nice change from the night time Chicago DJ I usually listen to on here in the early hours of the morning and reminds me of early childhood (trust forties wartime music to be STILL popular in late fifties NA) and that "Family Favourites" programme and the early Sunday evening stuff my old man used to like on his wireless before we had a telly. Toasted tea cakes, hot sweet tea and bloody bonkers Auntie Gertie coming round meant that my brother and I would be held down and "Brylcremed" to get us up to muster for one of those interminable family sessions of false politeness and me doing everything under the sun to grab the attention and embarrass mum............................like letting "Peter" * out of his cage ~ that was ok until one day he crashed into our new panoramic plate glass window and there was an ominous thud. As he lay fluttering on the polished wooden floor my Dad had the sudden realisation he was going to have to pick him up and wring his neck, poor little bu..........dgie. * I bet you thought "Peter" was my little brother!
