Week 85 Winner
Bit of a strange week on the TFF and a bit quieter than we have been, I think there are two main reasons why that has been the case. The first reason is that I believe we have all been feeling a bit more down than normal and hopefully our great win today will lift everyone’s sprites and we will see a good collection of the quality posts normally found on the TFF.
The second reason is that the forum is open to guests; it is a proven fact that the forum has always worked better as a member’s only forum and when members have to log in to view the forum, they tend to post a bit more. Now it’s a case that some don’t log in, or not all the time and they then tend to post less.
It’s a catch twenty two situation really, but I do believe that as we do have such great content on here and such rooms as our wonderful programme room, we should make it all available to as many people as we can and its one of the main reasons I ask everyone to stick to using the forum for what it was set up to be used for and not let it get ruined by some of the types of posts that have been made on here recently.
When I created this site my aim was to make a great reference site for Torquay United fans, a site where they could read great match reports and also interesting debates conducted in an adult and responsible way.
One or two on here recently who have always in the past sung the praises of the TFF, seem now not to want to offer the quaintly posts they once made, but instead just want to wind others up and also not wish to respect the wishes of the forum about certain things that has been politely asked, are not brought into the forum.
I am 100% fully committed to keeping this a quality forum and a site worthy of being read and I will never allow anyone to ruin a site so many do enjoy, as I said the other day, I don’t ask very much from any member on here for the time and commitment I put into the TFF and I know most of you appreciate the time I do put in and play your part in making the TFF what it is.
I also in another post on a completely different subject talked about the word CHOICE, well as far as forums go there is now a choice and if you only want to be a member on here so you can just wind other members up, ruin good threads by posting what is known is not welcome on the TFF, then maybe you may need to exercise your choice.
I’m not here to play games with people, I support Torquay United and offer for free a good platform for those that want to use it to discuss with others the club they also support, I said from day one this is a different type of forum from what you may have used before and run in a completely different way.
You can only ask things politely so many times and if it continues to fall on deaf ears then its time to have to make a CHOICE, I have never been afraid to make choices or make decisions and that is not about to change, but I would rather some just respect the forums wishes and not try and force confrontation that is both not welcome or wanted
Well it’s a bit embarrassing to announce that this weeks winner is myself, I thank all those who voted for me and as always thank all those who have made good posts on the TFF over the last week
As I can't change my account to anything other than admin I can't wear the gold winning stars, so you will just have to imagine I am ;D
One of the posts I made this week
Firstly I would like to thank you all for the manor in which you have all posted over the last 24 hours and even more so yesterday evening. It sure turned out to be a major disappointment we did not manage to bring in much need extra troops at a time we needed them more than any other in our clubs history. Everyone naturally found their emotions and real fears where heightened by the news and it is hard to keep ones self control and not end up posting on a forum something you later wished you hadn’t
I have read all your views and find it almost impossible to disagree with most of them, our league position, very thin and mostly inexperienced squad and lack of any real action to address the situation is there for all to see.
Its no surprise to me that Mike Batsons name has been mentioned, I remember writing on a forum after he had owned our club for around a year or so, that I felt he was like a boy with a brand new toy, so excited to play with it and as a result did not bother to read the rules. There is a vast difference between running a window company and a football club and one of the main differences is the most import part of any business, yes the customers.
One thing I always believed was that Batson never wanted it to be recorded in history that the club lost its league status under his ownership and as he had reached the point where he really no longer wanted to put any more money into the club, he so often left it nearly far too late to take action to save us from the drop. But he always seemed to get lucky and bring in a player or a new manager and we then were saved the drop by the skin of our teeth.
I’m sure some fans will still blame him for us ending our 80 year league history just because he sold the club to Roberts, but the history books will show it was under Roberts ownership we did go down and we should never forget it was Bateson who set the sale up so he could always come back and rescue us at the death and that is what he did, maybe he wanted us all to think he was not so bad after all and we should have been more grateful for all the years he did run and own the club.
As we all know we still went down and of all the big disappointments and real heartaches I have had supporting TUFC, going down and becoming a non league club for me was the very worst and took the longest to get over.
The pain was to be softened by the news a group of real fans who had a bit of money between then were going to buy the club and the future really did look so bright and I remember ever so well thinking at last the club was in really safe hands and it would only go one way, UP.
While I hated the non league scene and the stigma that went with it for me, I was pleased with the news about all the improvements that were going on and so pleased with the players who had been brought in so quickly as we did not have hardly any and boy were my City fans jealous and started calling my club a moneybags club, as their club had only got two new players from Team Bath.
Yes I thought we may be a non league club for now, but we won’t be forever and the new board really gave me and my fellow fans a real feel good factor that we had not felt for a very long time. Sadly the first season under their ownership ended in real pain and salt rubbed in our wounds like we have never felt before, seems those Team Bath players weren’t so bad after all.
The second season under their ownership ended in tears of joy and pride in our club was fully restored as we took our place back in the football league, but it could never be the case that the job was done, that was it, mission accomplished. Yes in part it was but the next logical stage was to build on that success and move the club on even further, but that has not happened and no matter what might have been achieved by the new board, it can’t be traded on forever.
The new board just like Batson did when he first took over put their money where their mouths were and believe me they put in large sums to win our league status back, but as we know Bateson over the years lost heart and interest and the club ended up having to live within its means.
The one big difference in the Bateson years was while he may have wanted out, running the club did provided some family members employment and even in the Roberts deal it was set up so they could continue to work at the club.
If I was an outsider looking in at the events this season, I could easily find myself asking is it the case the new board has got to the point so soon where they no longer want to put anymore money in. The signs might leave me to believe that and who could blame them as a football club is a cash hungry cow and if it wants to move forward and upward it needs constant feeding, as it will never get enough money coming in from fans and sponsors to be able to put out teams that will set the world alight if it does not have those regular cash injections.
The very biggest problem with the new board has always been and still is the lack of any real communications with the fans, far too many times fans find themselves trying to make up their own minds about any given situation and only because the club has not done the simple thing and let them know the real facts.
Sadly also it has failed to do the very simple things it should be doing, so many emails sent to it go unanswered and not only does it make the club look unprofessional it makes fans feel the club does not care and can’t be bothered to send back a reply.
Some fans are now feeing the lack of taking the action needed to strengthen the team and greatly improve its chances of staying up shows the club is guilty of not really caring and while I feel they do care and there has to be reasons why the boat was not pushed out, by being honest and telling fans as it is, would go someway to stop what is a slow growing number of fans becoming anti the board.
The absence of new players added to the lack of real answers from the club and the fact that so soon after something good did happen, fans now are thrust back to the very worrying times they thought were behind them, the board has lost some of the goodwill of the fans and for me that is very sad.
I have to agree with the views I have read on here that should the worst happen and we did once again make history for all the wrong reasons as we seem to like doing, fans would not forgive so easily this time going back down and the club that not so long ago looked like it was on the way up, could find itself spiralling down and to a depth it has never been before and one it would not come back to the surface from.
Whatever does happen with this season, things really will have to change so much for the next one, as while I hate to say it, the board is running out of credits at an alarming rate.
