I am absolutely gutted for him that he will not be in the world cup. He has been an ambassador for the sport.
whether you love him or hate him, his talent is beyond question.
He would not have started but what a talent to have on the bench
we will miss him this summer

He has not given up hope of still making the finals and it would be great if he could, even if it was the last five minutes in a game. Some seem to think he won't ever play again but that's not how he sees it and he is described as a fast healer.
It is very bad luck for him and how great would it be to say you played in four world cups, I will keep my fingers crossed he gets those five minutes, its the stuff dreams are made off.

Sorry Dave, there is ZERO chance of Beckham being fit for the World Cup finals - not only did he tear his Achilles, he ruptured it. He's not allowed to even run for the next four months... His question now - try to come back next season or retire. I'd edge towards the former, maybe back in this country, at the start of 2011.

Beckham's full rupture of the left achilles' tendon has necessitated a total re-stitching of the damage and additional healing support by way of utilising muscle tissue from nearby in the lower leg to support and integrate the healing process. No way will he be even runnng properly by the time the World Cup comes around, let alone be able to kick a ball let alone play! I once suffered a severe impact injury (a tare not a rupture) to the achilles whilst refereeing (clod hopping idiot from a South Hams village I'm afraid ) and the recovery time was a few months added to the additional (further) loss of speed off the mark that was incurred for life afterwards. At best, Beckham would only have been used in a restricted "cameo" role in this tournament anyway ~ being brought on to close games down to a satisfactory conclusion but his off the field contribution would have been great and if the manager is willing to have an injured old veteran around the place this role could still be utilised. But some managers patently do not like having "wounded soldiers" in the camp so we will have to wait and see whether we see Becks appear in South Africa in either a tracksuit on the team coach or in a suit with the "knobs" The early period of recovery from surgery to the Achilles' is excrutiating as it is the only such tendon in the body that is forever under tension ~ whatever postition the ankle joint is placed in or is immobilised in and I was fascinated to learn that he (Beckham) has had a steel "blocker" fitted to the spinal chord to alleviate such pain, indeed neutralise any sensation of feeling whatsoever. But of course this can only be a temporary measure and surely vastly restricive in deciding just where he travels to and excactly what he does in the immediate next few days and weeks. One thing is for sure in that in A.C. Milan he is at the finest club in the world for medical reputation and the ability and wherewithal of maintaining and even prolonging the careers of veteran players.................I don't think A.C. Milan would tolerate Chris Hargreaves' approach to life as a professional footballer!
