This is the original 'Torquay United Football Annual, Golden Jubilee Number, 1948/49' which contained 'a history of the club since 1898' and it’s origins as written by founder member Bill Luscombe. Although this history has since been printed in the later Official Centenary History of 1999 by Leigh Edwards I thought it would be good to show it in it’s original form, especially with the extra’s that come with it, cover, adverts, foreword etc. A good friend of mine will be especially pleased to see an advert from the family business he now owns and to note that even back in those immediate post-war days the family were supporters of the club. As has been mentioned elsewhere, the account relayed in this handbook is very much one man’s memory, backed up by paperwork and stories from his contemporaries, so there are a number of ‘facts’ that aren’t exactly as we now know them. The main one being the meeting at which the club was formed was in 1899, not 1898 as Luscombe states. But to give the club some credit, and despite the dates in it’s title, this handbook wasn’t actually published until 1949 as can be noted by the results list which shows the first half of the season already having been played. I have the pages on here as placed in the book, so adverts will appear as if they would when turning the page. (This is a long one, eighty pages, so may take a little time to load.)

Leigh, thanks for taking the trouble to post the 1948/49 jubilee handbook and history. It’s great to see it in its entirety. We’ll delicately describe the contents as the reminiscences of Bill Luscombe whilst acknowledging them as an important step in recognising that – by then – the club already had a considerable history. Reading Dave’s thoughts about the current season – how it was anticipated, how it compares with others, how it will be remembered – shows again how, although we may all agree on the undisputable facts of history, personal interpretation and recall is quite another matter!
Do we know if Bill Luscombe’s was the first attempt to record the club’s history? Is there knowledge of the history of Torquay United histories right through to Laura Joint and Messrs Gibbes and Lovis?

At around half-eleven on Saturday night this page of Bill Luscombe’s history was being discussed in Albert Square, Manchester a hundred years after the man himself was there. And, just as Bill had a tendency to confuse his facts (Balfour actually lost his Manchester seat in 1906 as opposed to 1910), I managed to get my Balfours and Asquiths mixed up. I’m not sure if Manchester city centre was quite as lively in those days. Certainly no mate of Bill’s would have received a text from one of his sons reporting the sighting of a certain Torquay player in an apparently “wasted” condition. It wouldn’t be fair to say whom lest historians of 2111 report it as gospel truth.... As ever we need to tread carefully with history.

50,000 in the square? I bet it was more like, let's say, 11,484. They knew how to boost attendances in those days!
