Tony Bedeau is being watched by Romford Kev down at Sittingbourne today as he makes his competitive debut for Kingstonian, and he tells me he's met up with someone else who played a definitive role in one of OUR seasons once. I'll leave him to tell you all about it when he gets on the site later.

I'm sure that many on here will remember how prolific a goal scorer he was during his days at (the now defunct) ENFIELD FC. In 1994, Torquay had the unenviable task of "taking on" Enfield in "their own back yard" - SOUTHBURY ROAD - in the FA Cup 2nd Round. Needless to say, Gary Abbott opened the scoring for Enfield but fortunately, a CHIMA OKORIE strike for The Gulls took the tie back to Plainmoor. Torquay's luck ran out on the following Tuesday however - A solitary KERR goal put the North London side through to Round 3, and ultimately, a 2-0 defeat away to LEICESTER CITY. Anyway, to cut a long story short, I managed a quick chat with Gary about the cup game of '94 - and on behalf of all the Gulls fans that he p*ssed off all those years ago, I called him "all the names under the sun" too!!

I do believe that Paul Furlong also played in that cup tie at Southbury Road also. George Borg and Jim Chandler two notable non league managers and definitely of the old "hard school" notoriety would have almost certainly been playing and would I not be mistaken in thinking that the legendary Eddie McCluskey was the Enfield manager of the time? Enfield were a powerful non league force at the time and had the potential to far out do the later exploits of neighbouring Barnet and Dagenham & Redbridge. Their ground was good enough for League football and they had a very successful night club (The Starlight Rooms) on site. That match day was the first occasion I met Ealing Gull - he was sitting on a bar stool (in a pub not a car park thankfully ;D) holding forth and someone said to me "this guy's some sort of Torquay fan I believe) despite them scoring in the opening minutes, we came back at them but as Romford says, they beat us in the replay. Garry Abbott was a fantastic leader of the line and a Smithfield Meat Porter (like Borg) and you don't take liberties with the likes of them pal!

I'll succombe to your greater knowledge Kev. Furlong made the huge jump from Enfield to top tier Coventry City when he departed Southbury Road!
