I've little idea of single-journey bus fares in Torbay. But two journeys of any length will quickly come to a fiver. By that time you're best buying an all-day ticket for £4.90 which will take you as far as Brixham, Dartmouth, Totnes, Newton Abbot and Teignmouth. £7.50 will get you to Exeter or Plymouth and back. Further afield too if you've the stamina and are a good planner. You get get a group return ticket from Saltash to Plymouth for about £8/9 for 4 people.

You get get a group return ticket from Saltash to Plymouth for about £8/9 for 4 people. I remember when living in Germany, circa 2002, that we could get a 5-person ticket that covered the bus from our house to Moenchengladbach railway station, the train from MG to Dusseldorf, and then the underground from Duss railway station to the city centre. Valid from 5am until the first train after 1 am, which ran every 15 mins or so. Worked out at about €5 per person, which was absolutely brilliant value for a journey of about 22 miles. And everything was connected and ran on time with classic German efficiency.

I suppose it is indicative of the reliance so many people had on buses 50-odd years ago that I could probably name most of the bus numbers from the first Western National bus stop on the right in Paignton bus station through to the last Devon General stop on the left. When we reverted to the 1-1-8 formation for the last five minutes against Telford, two thoughts went through my mind. Firstly, that this was the most-used tactical formation in the 1860s. Secondly, that it was the bus you could catch into town from Cadewell Lane in the 1970s.

I had a supernatural/psycic moment happen. Basically I worked at a video store back in 2001 and they reset all the passwords and told us not to open the back door for the rubbish that night. Anyway, the girl I'm working with opens the door and the alarm buzzer starts to go off, if we didn't deactivate it, it would trigger the alarm and the police would arrive and we'd be stuck there not leaving until after 10pm. This girl, starts trying to put a code into the machine. Bare in mind it's a 4 digit pin...so the chances of guessing all 4 digits is like 10,000 to 1 I think. In that moment I just had this thought in my head, almost like someone said 'go on do it'....so I go, first trying to tap in my old pincode which obviously didn't work. Next time round I tap in 4 different numbers and the device stops! She was confused and we just left. Anyway, turns out the manager had left the pincode of some old staff member on the system...how I could have known that or even guessed it is still a mystery. Personally I'm a Christian now and I believe there was divine intervention, someone really wanted me to get home on time that evening!
