Which goes to confirm what I said above as that would have been a 2-0 home win on 11 October 1969 against Glastonbury (who ended up champions that season). There were also a couple of previous sub efforts 2-2 away to Bridport in August (same day as we lost an evening game to Argyle as I remember rushing back for it) and 1-1 away to Weymouth Town I think a week before the Glastonbury game. John Benson played in the Weymouth game which was unusual as he was rarely in the reserves. Do you remember the games you played off the top of your head or have you got a little list? I think that recording of subs in the 60s / early 70s was a little slapdash even at first team level. A lot of appearance discrepancies seem to be over sub appearances. Let's hope that when someone writes a "Complete Record of TUFC - including all reserve team line-ups", he puts the record straight by restoring your lost sub games . Oh I don't think I'll lose any sleep over it Jon over 40 years later, or were you after my little list to help you in writing that book! Actually being a bit of a 'list' person particularly these days where I find myself standing in front of the fridge and don't know why, I did keep a record of all games I was involved in starting with my first club Newtor United in the South Devon Youth League. That included the line up of the team I was in and use of substitutes. I also had loads of newspaper cuttings and programmes, but over the course of the years with many house moves and a divorce it has all just disappeared. I have my suspicions that those momentoes may have gone the same way as Budleigh's football collection so my ex-wife is a prime suspect! ;D So yes now I have to rely on what I can remember although I was quite pleased Jon when in the past you posted up Herald Express cuttings from 3 FA Youth Cup ties against Argyle and a Western League game against Glastonbury to find that my memory of those games was not too bad. The ones you have quoted above I have a reasonable memory of I suppose because of the excitement of first being involved with the club I had supported from a kid. Climbing on the coach outside of Freddie Hawkins garage in Newton Abbot for my first trip with them to Bridport and seeing my heroes Tony Scott and Alan Welsh sitting together in the front seat as I climbed the steps gave me loads of excitement but probably made me more nervous than I was already. I remember Alan Welsh being particularly reassuring and considerate, and he scored our two goals that afternoon. I also remember the dash back to Plainmoor for an evening kick off and losing 2-1 to Argyle. After that I played a few friendlies for the youth team (we weren't in a league) and then I remember the Weymouth game largely because John Benson was playing and I sat next to him at lunch, and the following week was my first full game at home to Glastonbury which of course I would remember. Allan Young (brilliant bloke) talked me through the whole game! You are certainly right about a completely ad hoc way of recording the use of substitutes in those early days of them, and I have vague memories of some clubs counting it as an appearance if you came on in the first half but not if you came on in the second half. You could in theory therefore have 0 appearances and 2 goals!! Even full appearances weren't always in the programme, for example the following season when I played only one game that appearance plus single appearances for many other players were not shown. The only way I would guess of getting an accurate record would be to access the Western League team sheets submitted by the clubs (and I know they would not be accurate but I can say no more as we have been in enough trouble for such things in recent years!! ). That 70/71 season I played in 2 or 3 pre-season games for the reserves, and I particularly remember overcoming a 2-0 half time deficit away to Bodmin Town and winning 3-2 with a brilliant goal from Rodney Webber in the last minute. The one Western League game I played was early in the season at Plainmoor, a 2-1 defeat to Bridgwater Town, where I played right back first half and left back in the second marking our ex-player Dougie Clark. After that I was playing for Newton Abbot Spurs in the South Western League before transferring to Brixham United in mid-December who were then playing in the P&D League Premier. Ex-Gull Ralph Calland was manager, lovely bloke. After Brixham I went to Centrax (where I worked at the time) then playing in the Premier Division of the South Devon League, before joining the police. It was then apart from odd dalliances in the Torbay Wednesday and Sunday Leagues with teams like Matts United and Masons Arms just police teams I played for. Police football (and other police sport - remember Geoff Capes?) was surprisingly good particularly at inter-force and international level. There were loads of ex-professional footballers and ex-apprentices in the police. When I was secretary of our Force team we had in the team Rhys Wilmot (Arsenal), Ian Main (Exeter), Gerry Nardiello (Torquay), Gordon Nisbet (Argyle), Graeme Kirkup (Exeter), John Durham (Torquay), and George Torrance (Brentford), as well as ex-apprentices and amateur youth players with Football League clubs. Well when I started my reply to you Jon I was expecting no more than about 5 lines but it must be a sign of how an aging brain works as when one thought ended another just followed on! ;D I did find that when Merse was posting on here he would talk about something that would make me instantly recall something long forgotten - it just needs that trigger. That's what makes the history stuff you and Barton in particular but also a few others introduce to the site so fascinating. Well must close. Off to pack my skiing gear for a white week in Sestriere. Will probably pop in to the San Siro on Wednesday for AC Milan v Novara in the Coppa d'Italia - local derby as Novara is only about 30 miles from Milan. Won't be able to post a report when I get back as my short term memory is a lot worse than my long term memory. Could always write a list I suppose!

I suppose you were fortunate to be there at a time when some cracking players would occasionally play in the Western League team. Some of my contemporaries saw Western League action ten years later but had less chance to rub shoulders with the greats. That was partly because the squad was smaller and partly because we suffered a bizarre series of injuries to cut us down to the bare bones - players asssaulted in John Menzies, struck by frisbees on Teignmouth beach and involved in unfortunate incidents with bedpans at the Exeter Eye Clinic.

A fresh ground for me yesterday as I went to Bitton which lies on the “upper” road between Bristol and Bath. Just beyond the edge of the Bristol built-up area - and that cluster of other Western League clubs such as St George's, Cadbury Heath, Oldland Abbotonians and Longwell Green – Bitton’s ground has a splendid vista of Kelston Round Hill and surrounding countryside. What’s more, from eavesdropping, I understand you can also see parts of Noel Edmonds' estate (some of which may have contravened planning laws). And, if you’re so minded, you can pop up the road for a cuppa in a converted railway carriage at the Avon Valley Railway.
A pretty standard Western League set-up that would have been improved in recent years: sizeable club house; a few seats under cover; a main pitch that rises in one corner; several other pitches alongside (including cricket). Surprisingly no nets for wayward balls which may have contributed to yesterday's six minutes of second-half stoppage time.
Yesterday’s game was a last 32 FA Vase match against West Auckland Town who are doing well in the Northern League. I’m sure you’ll know the story of West Auckland and how they won the first “World Cup” (of sorts) in 1909. Yesterday they fell behind just as they were getting on top but made a positive tactical change at half-time and deservedly won 3-1 in a hugely watchable and keenly-contested encounter watched by a “bumper” crowd of 246.

..........it would appear Rotherham United will be the next club undertaking stadium rebuilds to complete as it were and become eligible to be visited by dedicated "hoppers" to keep their records up to date......... (see excellent site below for details of forthcoming builds etc) www.footballgroundguide.com/developments.htm

There's one glaring gap in this list, and I don't mean Arsenal or Chelsea:
Accrington Stanley Barnsley Blackpool Bradford City Brentford Bristol Rovers (Eastville) Burnley Bury Carlisle Cambridge United Charlton Chester (Sealand Road) Chesterfield (both, naturally) Colchester (Layer Road) Crewe Darlington (Feethams and the Arena) Derby (Baseball Ground) Doncaster (Belle Vue) Exeter Gillingham Grimsby Halifax Huddersfield (Leeds Road) Hull (Boothferry Park) Ipswich Leeds Leicester (Filbert Street) Lincoln Liverpool Macclesfield Man City (Maine Road) Man United (Chesterfield v Middlesbrough, FA Cup semi) Mansfield Morecambe Newcastle Newport (Somerton Park) Nottingham Forest Notts County Oldham Oxford (Manor Ground) Peterborough Port Vale Reading (Elm Park) Rochdale Rotherham (Millmoor) Scarborough Scunthorpe Sheffield United Sheffield Wednesday Shrewsbury (both) Stockport Stoke (Victoria Ground) Sunderland (Roker) Swindon Tranmere Walsall (both) Wigan (Springfield Park) Wimbledon (Plough Lane) Wolves Wycombe Wanderers York City Cardiff (Ninian Park, to see Bob Marley. Does that count?) Matlock Town Alfreton Buxton Blyth Spartans Sheffield FC (Don Valley) Hallam Staveley MW Shirebrook Town Dronfield United (defunct, played at the Coach & Horses, currently home to Sheffield FC) Coventry Sporting Club (v Tividale of "Journey to Wembley" fame) Gresley Rovers Dorchester AP Leamington (Tachbrook Road)
Kalmar FF Galway United Hibernian Raith Rovers St Johnstone (but only for a look round)
and possibly one or two others I can't remember.

Cardiff (Ninian Park, to see Bob Marley. Does that count?) No. Matlock Town Alfreton Buxton Sheffield FC Hallam Staveley MW This reads like my “hit list”. Coventry Sporting Club (v Tividale of "Journey to Wembley" fame) A football classic which I recently re-read. Bloody spooky, mind, considering I was at several of the games featured. And it was only this time around that I smelled a rat as to why Brian James started at Tividale. They just happened to be in the same early rounds group as Telford United then managed by his old mate Geoff Hurst. One or two of us can claim Galwegians rugby ground for a pre-season friendly between Galway United and Torquay United. Speaking of pre-season games, isn’t it time for The New Rangers (or whatever they’re going to be called) to arrange a few games against major English clubs in keeping with their newly-found status? Torquay United would be a good start. Or maybe Chesterfield? Not that the “old co” Rangers would ever have found themselves on the same pitch as a club such as Chesterfield. Not on level terms anyway…..

Funny you should mention that, old chap: 1980/1 Anglo-Scottish Cup quarter-final 1st leg: Rangers 1 Chesterfield 1 (Walker) 2nd leg: Chesterfield 3 (Bonnyman 2 Moss) Rangers 0 ...and they were lucky to get nil!

Well, what an amazing spectacle I witnessed on Friday night.
Yes, Workington's Borough Park is a sight to behold which should be on everyone's list of grounds to visit.
Especially for a goalless pre-season friendly against Barrow.
All part of an excessive eight-games-in-six-days for me.
First up was a trip to Matlock v Chesterfield on Tuesday in the company of our friend Wildebeeste. A pleasure to meet the man.
Then a binge on Thursday: the two Olympic games at Hampden quickly followed by the Europa League tie between St Johnstone and Eskisehirspor.
Workington on Friday, Annan v Livingstone in the Pawnbrokers Cup on Saturday.
Of course that's a pretty poor effort in pure groundhopping terms given I'd previously been to both St Johnstone and Annan.
Then, today, the Olympic games at the real SJP. Whereas I was originally disappointed by the prospect of seeing the first four matches in Group D - Spain, Honduras, Morocco and Japan - it's actually proved hugely enjoyable and compelling. Well worth £40 for the four games.
Off home tomorrow.
If only I could remember where I'm now living.......

Tonight's game was the first I've missed at Plainmoor in over five years. Instead I was ferried to a FA cup replay by a long-standing associate of Wildebeeste. A number of Cheshire real ale pubs on the way and a veggie pasty in Lymm made for an excellent outing. A decent game too at Runcorn Linnets which was eventually won by Hemsworth Miners Welfare on penalties. Linnets are a trust-run club who have taken over the mantle of the former Runcorn club. The Millbank Linnets Stadium, close to the M56, is fairly modest but purpose-built with a view to expansion. I'll be watching Linnets progress from now on.
