"Looking Back" Fifty Years of Distinguished History
The Plymouth & District Football League (1905/06 to 1954/55)by Chas. J. PoundCharles Pound was obviously a well-known member of the local football scene. He also appears in the line-up as the referee for the match, Saltash versus Torquay United in 1931, as described in the Alec Adrian book, 'Dunkirk Sportsmen' posted elsewhere. This is a wonderful 'Jubilee History' book chronicling the history of this league from 1905/06 until 1954/55 and has numerous references to Torquay United as both Torquay Town & Babbacombe. There is also mention of various players from United, with the connection with Dartmouth United (as also mentioned by Alec Adrian) very apparent, especially the page showing 'Noted Players of Early History' where the Dartmouth list includes four players who went on to play for, or were currently on the books of, Torquay; Dave Mercer, Cyril Hemingway, Ralph Birkett and James Mellon (spelt J. Medlon in the book but presumably the same person). In the 'Some Prominent Players of 1953-54' list is Anstey playing for Dartmouth United who later appears in various Torquay United reserve team programmes. There are numerous other interesting items in this history, of both clubs and players, as well as administrators etc, but shall leave these to be found in the reading of it. (Apologies for the size and time it may take to load but wanted to post the whole book rather than just snippets.)

That brought back some happy memories for me.I started watching my dad playing for Newton Spurs when they won the league 49/50,he laterpacked in playing and took to Plainmoor in 1953/54 season. Can remember going after matches into the bar, under the stand at the Recreation, and sitting down with dad and having the after match meal with the rest of the two teams. I thought I was the bees knees. When I started as an office boy with F J Reeves the Totnes timber merchants Alec Lindop worked in the timber yard . I got to know him quite well and played in several football matches with him when wethe Devon/Cornwall section of the commpany played Someset/Wilts section. What a player Could do with someone like him now built like a barn door and fearless he certainly knew where the back of the net was, Saw also the name Cyril Heath mentioned .I knew him through cricket when I used to guest for the Buckfastliegh midweek side against touring sides and he was captain. He was still playing cricket when he was 70 fit as a butchers dog.Several other names at Newton Spurs,Brixham and Totnes I became friendly with as well. Thanks for so many fond memories.

Crikey - one hell of a lot of interesting stuff in there! Thanks for putting that up Leigh! Nice to see a local league that knows when it was formed and celebrates its jubilee after fifty years. I'm sure there are lots of things in there for me to pick up on! Three league wins for Torquay Town isn't strictly right. They mean Torquay Town in 1912 and Torquay United Reserves in 1923 and 1947. I thought we were runners-up in 1945/46 - but they say otherwise here. Interesting to see Paignton Town mentioned as we've discussed them and also the short-lived semi-pro Paignton Corinthians. This is a thread I will keep coming back to - far too much to comment on in one post.

That's an amazing little publication, Leigh.
Interesting how - at a time when several South West Peninsula clubs have declined promotion on the grounds of increased travelling - the league once appeared to extend from Truro/Newquay to South Devon. Paignton to Newquay would have been a fair old trek by road seventy-five years ago. Perhaps they went by train with long waits at Newton Abbot, North Road (maybe) and Par?
And what about some of those old names? The mighty Green Waves, Woodland Villa, Embankment, Bull Point (I was only thinking about the old ferry as I came over Brunel's bridge tonight), Sherwood Foresters, Torpedo Depot, Submarine Depot, Naval Stores.....anyone for the explosive Submarine v Torpedo derby?
Totnes United - a force in the 1950s? Totnes would have been a rather different place in those days with its timber, bacon and dairy.
Lenn Kneebone - Green Waves to Argyle - not the old grammar school history man, surely?

Brilliant read. I was stationed at RAF Hope Cove (Malborough) and played a few games for Malborough in the P & D League between 1954 and 1956, also for the camp team in the midweek league. We won the Devon Mid Week Cup against Exeter University 4-0 in early 1957. I still have the Plymouth and District Handbooks for 1953-54 and 1954-55. Great Days.
