Just bought my 1st car yesterday a 1992 renault clio. In good condition for the age mot till August. Shame bout insurace though cheapest quote so far £800! Only paid £595 for the car!!
What was everybodys 1st car?

My first car I bought in 1971 before I passed my driving test and it cost me the grand total of £17 .10s and car insurance back then was not expensive for young drivers as it is today. The car was very rare as it was a 1951 Morris minor with a split windscreen, but what made it even rarer was the headlights were in the grill. I believe they were moved in 1952 up onto the wings and there they stayed until the car was no longer produced. I also believe the one I owned was based on the Germany VW cars of the day. It went well enough and just to own a car at 17 years old back then was something also rare and so there was no stigma attached to owning such an old car. Being young and foolish back then the car came to an unfortunate end as we would play cops and robbers in what was then the new multi-story car park in Newton Abbot. It was on the way back done from the top that I came off one of the ramps far to fast and could not make the turn and I hit one of the supporting concrete posts and that was the end of that car, wish I had it now as it would be worth a bob or two these days. I soon was on the road again with my second car an Austin A30; it cost £25 and was a lot newer only it had one big problem. There was a short in the wiring that was never found and while the dynamo was working just fine and the battery was in good condition, all the charge was being lost somewhere. The result was it was more like a battery car as you had to charge it up to go out in it and during the day the battery would just run down until there was not even enough power to fire the spark plugs. The other big problem with cars back then was they so often would over heat, I bet a few on here found themselves knocking on someone’s front door asking for some water for the radiator. A picture showing the same model as my first car, only mine was just plain black.  |

Exruciatlingly expensive I have had to pay monthly and have gone with elephant.co.uk. Paying over £1000 and have only had 3rd party fire and theft on this occasion. To be fair to elephant there deposit was only £85 compared to others that wanted £200 plus.
I can only be grateful I am over 25 otherwise I dread to think how much it would have been then!

A 1959 Ford Anglia (SJY 519) which I bought in 1972 for a 100 quid. You should have seen the look on my mothers face the first time we had a car parked outside the house. She kept looking out the window to make sure it was still there.

1966 Austin Westminster 3ltr, cost £100, and lasted 2years before 2nd gear went in a 3 speed box. Massive car with room for 4 plus baby plus a full size pram and luggage for a trip to the north east, twice. Next cars were a seiries of minis inc a cooper S, 1275 clubman and riley elf.
Wish I still had the S.

I started my driving in the mid seventies and with my older brother having a car sales and petrol staion on the Totnes road he was bound to be the one who "saw me off" with my first car - a 1957 Vauxhall Victor FB with 3 speed column change gearbox and a lovely plastic red bench seat in the front. Cost me all of £20 lasted about a month before the head gasket blew and ended up being melted parked up next to a giant bonfire that my bro used to put on at the rear of the garage on Nov 5th. Happy days! That's a lot of money wolfie you must be a young-an like my 18 year old son who just passed his test and has been quoted £1900 for his insurance. Must try Elephant.com though I understand you can only drive on trunk roads ;D |
