Really don’t feel like writing anything about football right now so I’ll write about fake power tools instead.
Do you own anything that is a fake? Did you buy it knowing it was a fake? I.e. a designer label piece of clothing that looked good and could pass reasonably well as the real thing, or have to been conned buying something you believed was the real thing only to discover it was fake and you had been ripped off.
With the very top brand power tools having very high price tags I suppose its no wonder that there are fake power tools on sale and they only get bought because the buyer really believed they were getting the real thing and at a price they could not believe.
I must confess I have not seem a fake power tool for a while now but three years ago I was seeing them nearly every day and I was shocked to learn it was not only tradesmen’s buying from some man in a pub getting conned, but the odd hire shop owner as well.
I was asked to call and check out a new customer near Bristol who wanted to open an account with us and I was told he had four Dewalt breakers to collect for repair. As soon as I saw them I knew they were fakes and told the hire shop owner they were and I was not interested in taking them back to Toolfix for repair.
The reasons being that firstly we are Dewalt warranty agents and they would not be best pleased if we started to repair fake Dewalt machines and secondly these fakes are nothing like a Dewalt inside and there would be no parts back up service for them, they are cheap and nasty and will soon go wrong and then they are only fit for the bin.
Boy did he want to argue with me and told me he knew they were genuine Dewalt machines and my boss had agreed to give a free estimate on the cost of repairing them and I had to take them with me. I told him I was not taking them full stop and he could speak with my boss if he wanted at anytime but right now I was leaving and getting on my way and not taking the Dewalt fakes with me.
The thing is they were not even good fakes, sure they were yellow in colour and had a Dewalt sticker on them, but if you had ever seem or used a proper Dewalt power tool, then you would surly know these were fakes.
I can understand how a tradesman might get fooled buying from a man in the pub, he gets asked if he wants to buy some really cheap Dewalt tools, gets taken out to the car park when the light is not so good, gets told the story they are all clearance tools as Dewalt has brought out a new range. He might even be shown a picture of what the seller claims is the new range and if you take a tool like the one below that will cost you £600 and get one that looks like an older model and are asked £150 for it and don’t forget it might be in a genuine Dewalt case, you may well buy it and believe it’s your lucky day.
Well it won’t be if you’re a tradesman because it won’t stand up to the uses you’re going to give it and if you are really lucky you might just get three months work out of it and then you will be throwing it in the bin.
There are a few Makita fake mitre saws that really do look very close to the proper Makita mitre saws and the very first one I came across fooled me and also my boss and it was only when he stripped it down was it clear it was a fake. We had a much closer look at it and discovered some slight changes on the outside as well and I was then able to identify any others I came across and inform the owner that he in fact owned a fake machine
I myself have a watch that is a fake TAG make that Ant brought back from Turkey, it really is a super watch and I have had it for many years now and it keeps perfect time and looks a really quality watch.
So what fakes do you have and did you buy them knowingly, or where you conned.
